Intriguing book on prayer

I purchased this book knowing nothing about the author, but because the title intrigued me. It has challenged me in my walk with God to devote more time to the act of prayer. Especially helpful/educational was the first part of the book where you are encouraged to LISTEN to God when you pray, not just simply rattle off a list of requests. The focus of the book is to challenge the reader to know God through prayer, and to develop that relationship through prayer. It has done that to me, and I would encourage others to read, think, and do the same.

Amazing!!!

Everything in Whole Prayer made so much sense. Only a month after I've read it, I find myself advising my friends in their prayer lives using Wally's words. Prayer is communication between us and God, it is not just asking God for something and expecting him to fulfill our wishes. I originally checked Whole Prayer out of the library, I can't wait to buy it and read it again.
I think my favorite part was being able to "see" what Wally was describing in the first chapter about Alaska. His descriptive style amazes me. I felt as if I was experiencing Alaska for the first time along with him and Thanne.

About the Author
Stephen B. Klein (Phd, Psychology, Rutgers University) is a Professor of the Department of Psychology at Mississippi State University, where he has taught since 1990. He teaches a variety of undergraduate classes, including Learning Principles and Processes, Human Learning and Thinking, Theories of Learning, and Quantitative Methods, as well as graduate classes in Advanced Learning, Advanced Learning and Motivation, and Advanced Experimental Methods. His research interests are in the biological basis of learning and memory and constraints and predispositions on food preferences and aversions. His early research included investigations of aversive conditioning and flavor aversion learning. Klein has written and co-edited a number of textbooks, including Contemporary Learning Theories: Pavlovian Conditioning and the Status of Traditional Learning Theory; Handbook of Contemporary Learning Theories; and Biological Psychology, Second Edition.

Hosting a good ol' fashion book burning? Start here.

I'm a generally a minimalist, but this book is just horrible.

You know those old text books from the 1950s that had no side articles, personal stories, and varied layout to help keep you awake? This book fell into a time machine and somehow landed at the publishing company.

Research shows that modern text book designs are more effective because of the numerous tricks they employ to keep things interesting. A little color here, an amusing photo there, and a side box with an entertaining semi-related story go a long way. Of all topics you'd think a book titled 'Learning' would take that into account, but no sir. Not by a long shot.

This book is 100% black and white print, zero page layout effort was spent on it, and the only diagrams you get are bar graphs and a few drawings of rabbits hooked up to eye blink machines.

And the writing style is straight up cryptic. I'm rather verbally inclined and can run through most textbook chapters (lets say 70-100 pages) for 3000-4000 level courses in an hour or two. With some highlighting and a few notes on the side it takes no other effort to understand or retain the material. But this book is closer to 519 pages of journal articles. To process the material from ~30 page chapters in this book its taking me about 6 hours of reading and 5-6 pages of notes because its horrible inconsistent and frequently uses a tangled web of acronyms. For example, sometimes you'll find the _exact_ same concepts labeled with multiple different bold face vocabulary terms. And I mean super simple concepts like 'lowered pain threshold' having multiple vocabulary terms just 1-2 pages apart. Some of the wording requires making simple flowcharts to understand what the author is attempting to convey.

Perhaps if you're a tenured professor, doctoral candidate, or have lots of experience reviewing journal articles this book will be easier to read and understand. Actually, I worked in 2 experimental psychology research labs and reviewed literature bi-weekly and this book was still difficult to process. This book totally misses its target as undergraduate course material.

In review:

- This book uses _nothing_ but the dreadful black and white linear print pages.
- Does not attempt to break the monotony with any sort of lines, text variations, side stories, or photographs.
- Uses difficult to detangle language. And this is coming from a guy who worked in a psycholinguistics lab for 2 years.
- Yes, this book is $20-40 cheaper than comparable books that have fancier layouts and designs. No, it isn't worth the savings.

If you are a professor investigating this book, the department chair, or even on a committee selecting textbooks for a learning course I plead of you to not subject your students to this book. The professor teaching this course at my university is an excellent instructor, but I am firmly convinced his intention with this book is to push us to the maximum with a difficult book.

Please don't use this book.

Badly outdated and poorly written, with factual errors

This book truly stands out among all of the bad textbooks I have used.

This is not an advanced book. The concepts are quite simple, but Klein has a talent for explaining simple things in the worst possible way. If you want to see for yourself, check out the diagram explaining discrimination gradients. The book tries to come off as very technical because it contains so many descriptions of research. These are bad explainations and not very instructive at all. Another frustrating point is the use of historical jargon for the sake of jargon. He uses inconsistent terminology and makes no attempt to compare similar terms or integrate similar concepts.

What also amazed me was the list of sources in the back of the book. Most were written between 1920 and 1960. The few that were written in the 80's or later were very trivial studies. If you want to teach a course on the history of the study of learning, this is still a bad book.

Once Klein ventures beyond basic conditioning, he runs into subjects that he apparently just doesn't understand. His definition of "syntax" as a combination of phonology and grammar is a mixture of backwards and plain wrong. Just compare this section to the Wikipedia articles on the same subjects. His explanation of "algorithms" seems like a joke.

Finally, there was the chapter on "concepts." This chapter made me sad. Students are learning from this, you know. Don't look for any discussion of Piaget or schemas here. He begins with a horrible explanation of basic logic, and then goes on to discuss experiments that tested whether animals can tell the difference between different types of objects. It turns out, a pigeon can tell the difference between pictures of water and pictures of things that are not water. It's silly that money was even spent doing this research, and absurd that it was included in a textbook. All animals have to drink. Perhaps this was just included so that he could reference "modern" (meaning 1980's) research in this 2009 edition.

If you are a student, just write down the concepts that the professor mentions and look them up on Wikipedia. Better yet, drop the course and take it later with a professor that can recognize a good book.

If you are a professor, keep in mind that this book will not only fail to give your students much meaningful knowledge, it will also completely turn them off to an important field of study.

Missing important features that should be in a textbook.

This review covers the 5th edition.

At first sight, this textbook seemed daunting. There are no friendly pictures in this book, just some charts. It is mainly plain text, and it is entirely black and white. Be warned, this thing has the not quite so great effect of making the reader go cross eyed (figuratively speaking). This serves to make the book very substantive, because not much space is wasted on distracting pictures. However, it does have hundreds of charts/graphs and has some helpful tables. The bland text is boring! Also, the book is missing some things- such as when you see a word bolded in the text, you would expect to find in the margin some kind of definition, correct? Well, in this book- there are no definitions in the margin. No notes that point forward or backward. And it is true that there are different terms introduced for the exact same concept at different times in the text- how is the student to know which they should focus on?

The most helpful part of the layout I found while reading the chapters is that there are regular stopping points, where the author repeats in bulleted format some main points of what you just read (or in my case, thought I had read). There are also some questions to test your learning- so that makes reading the text a bit more active, helps retention.

Professors be warned, this text isn't that friendly- the tone and structure makes it feel somewhat like a psych literature review, and not a friendly format for the unfamiliar student.

Through a Different Lens

This book is a good start if you wish to learn about Spinoza. The fact that it is written by a renowned philosopher certainly adds to its charm. The book is part of a series by the author about individuals he considers to be the great philosophers. His choices are generally good ones.

Jaspers tells you most of what you need to know about Spinoza in a sophisticated but easily comprehensible manner. The only problem with the book is that it is now somewhat old and does not take into account recent work on the subject. There has been a great amount of recent scholarship concerning Spinoza's life and philosophy. In addition, there have been several high-level popular treatments. Steven Nadler and Steven B. Smith have written works which have significantly broadened the field.

The foregoing should not discourage readers from looking into this book. It is a good and useful one, especially if Spinoza is not the reader's principal interest. Nevertheless, if the reader is primarily interested in Spinoza and in the most up-to-date scholarship, he or she should look elsewhere.

The best book about Spinoza I have encountered

I have read a dozen books or so about Spinoza's philosophy over the last 15 years. This is easily the most interesting.

It is as if one great mind (Jaspers) read the works of another great mind (Spinoza) and lets you listen in as he thinks about what he has read. Among other things, Jaspers explains that Spinoza is one of the few human beings who managed to think his way to a vision of God that lies beyond all words, all concepts, all symbols, all liturgy, all sacred books - beyond everything that most of us require to humanize God so that we can even begin to see - and then once there had the spiritual strength to never look away.

Jaspers articulated for me precisely why I had hitherto suspected that Spinoza is one of the most important Western philosophers. For that I am very grateful.

Get As Close As You Want!

Meryl Sawyer has a knack for writing great romantic suspense. She is the kind of author that you just automatically buy her books when you see a new one with her name on it. With Sawyer, you get your money's worth: suspense, interesting characters, dialogue that flows, and let's face it, there is usually some hot sex in her books. What more could you ask for?
Alyssa Rossi is a costume jewelry designer with her own business in Italy. On the advice of her aunt she allows her business to be acquired by TriTech. TriTech will take over the running of her business, allow her to expand, and free her up to focus more on her designing. The only catch is she has to work at their headquarters in New Orleans. For most this wouldn't be a problem, but for Alyssa it is. Years earlier she had fled after being accused of kidnapping her cousin's newborn baby. You see, Alyssa's cousin, Phoebe, had managed to get pregnant by Clay Duvall, the love of Alyssa's life. Being from the upper crust of society, the two married leaving Alyssa out in the cold. Foul play was suspected in the baby's disappearance, but nothing was ever proven to confirm or deny Alyssa' innocence.
Jake Williams is TriTech's CEO. Jake has come up through life the hard way. In fact he never knew his father Max until the old man hunted him up and persuaded him to take over the family business. Jake doesn't give a flip about New Orleans' society. He barely tolerates it for the sake of his father with whom he is trying to build a relationship. One of the things he does have to tolerate is the presence of Clay Duvall in his company, it was part of the deal when TriTech acquired the Duvall company. What doesn't make sense to Jake is why Clay bought a small jewelry making company, a company, which doesn't fit the profile of TriTech. He begins to investigate the purchase of the company and finds himself fascinated by Alyssa Rossi. The past begins to unfold while unraveling the present and shaping the future.
This has been my lucky month for reading great books with gorgeous leading men. Jake is terrific. He has had to fight to get where he is and doesn't care what others think of him. Instead of trying to fit into New Orleans' society, he barely tolerates them and doesn't hesitate to let them know how he feels about them. Jake's dialogue reflects the man he is. While he presents himself as a suave businessman, anytime someone gets too close or he isn't sure how to handle a situation, he resorts to using sarcastic remarks that are often funny.
There is an interesting group of secondary characters, each who play an integral part of the story. Parts of their stories help weave the complex plot involved in this story. Meryl Sawyer has written a great book. Anyone who reads this one won't be bored. Carve some time out of your busy schedule, find yourself some place comfortable, and get ready to be entertained.

Fantastic romantic suspense

Alyssa Rossi fled New Orleans for Florence, Italy because her memories of her hometown are all ugly after the betrayal from her loved ones. She succeeds in opening Rossi Designs, a costume jewelry business that performs quite well Alyssa heeds her Aunt Theodore Canali's advice to sell her company to TriTech and go home as part of the purchase.

Upon returning from Patagonia, TriTech CEO Jake Williams is shocked to learn that minority business partner Clay Duvall purchased Rossi Designs. He needs to know why because the small company is outside the obvious profile of his firm's core competencies. Uncomfortable with this particular acquisition, Jake gets even more paranoid when he sees Alyssa is a dead ringer for Clay's wife. Though a relatively small venture for what TriTech normally acquires, Jake makes inquiries to better understand Clay's motive. As Jake and Alyssa begin to fall in love, everyone within their radar has their own dangerous plans that could harm either or both of them.

CLOSER THAN SHE THINKS is an exciting romantic thriller that runs on all cylinders from start to finish. The story line is filled with action and romance as the suspense and tension heat to the melting point. Jake and Alyssa make a delightful duo and the support cast amplifies the plot by fostering their own desires at the peril of the key couple. Meryl Sawyer exhibits why she is a New York Times best selling author with this extremely effective novel.

Not very close to a true romance

This is my second Meryl Sawyer book. Since I found that first one so fascinating, I expected the same from Closer Than She Thinks. However, this novel in my opinion, fails to deliver romance. We instead learn enough about the hero and heroine to realize they are the leads but so many secondary characters are given a lot of time and attention as well that I could only say this book was supposed to be about the leads, Alyssa and Jake, but was only a little.
Alyssa Rossi is coming back to New Orleans after living in Italy a number of years. A conglomerate based in New Orleans has purchased her successful company and Alyssa is looking forward to the cash injection into her business that was made possible by its purchase.
Jake Williams is the CEO of TriTech, the conglomerate that has purchased Alyssa's business. It was done without his knowledge and her company does not fit TriTech's profile for purchases. He begins to investigate because he suspects TriTech is being ill used by one of its officers and he visits the small jewelry business while in Europe prior to the company's relocation to New Orleans. Jake meets the owner, Alyssa and the ground is set for what had the potential to be a great romance.
This book was about one-tenth romance and nine-tenths mystery. If this were written as a mystery instead of a romance, it still would not have fared well in my rating. The mystery is just not that well written and is actually weak if we are to compare it to other mystery novels. I could hardly believe what I was reading as I read page after page about secondary characters. Sometimes, one of the leads was involved in one of these scenes. And on occasion, both leads were involved with these scenes centering on secondary characters. But when it comes to scenes with just Jake and Alyssa, those are few and far between. As their relationship develops, we wonder how because we certainly have gotten to read little about it. This is not romance writing.
This is a three star rating because it had great possibilities and my respect for Sawyer as a writer. However, I would call the book a disappointment. It was difficult to keep my interest in a slow moving plot with so many diversions into all of these other people's lives. We yearn to know more about Jake and Alyssa's individual characters as well as their relationship. The sensual scenes were infrequent and were one of the few times we got to see them together. These scenes rated no more than a 3.0 to 3.5 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).
I wanted to be fair so I did finish reading this book but found it very simple to just skim the final 60 pages and not miss a thing. The ending only made my opinion worse. No additional percentage of time is given the leads. Other characters keep yapping along as the leads are in the background. It's beginning potential fell flat in the end.

Students renting beware!

If you're renting the book for class and using Kindle for PC, there are going to be a few excerpts missing. The first piece is Bartolome's In Defense of Indians, there are a few more that my class hasn't gotten to. Apparently this only happens on the Kindle for PC, as the missing excerpt shows up on the iPad. I've contacted Amazon and they said they're contacting the publisher. If you're going to be renting this book for class, I'd check first with Amazon to see if the problem has been resolved. ONLY applies to Kindle for PC.

Essentially a cut and paste of others' work with exercises - not a classroom textbook

I am taking an Introduction to Sociology class as part of a required course for my Computer Science degree. This text book is used in the course. The book does not address specific audiences, so I would assume it is written for audience without any sociology background.

Although the authors of this book write some of the chapters, the majority of the book consists of other researchers' paper or articles regarding each chapter's topic. This makes the style of writing in the book inconsistent and hard to follow.

The book does not come with glossary. Some of the vocabularies are introduced in the prior chapters, but I often find myself lost of context because of the jargon used in this book.

The exercises or workbook activities are confusing sometimes. For example, one of the question asked "According to John Dewey, is man defined by his environment or does his environment define man?" This question can definitely use a better wording.

I would avoid this book, if it is not required.

The exclusive dominance of conventional crime methods has also faded because corporate wrongdoing is now specifically addressed by a pyramidal enforcement architecture, taking compliance orientated and sanctioning approaches, using both civil and criminal enforcement mechanisms, where criminal law is now the sanction of last resort.

Corporate and white-collar crime in Ireland is the first monograph to analyse the transition in Ireland from a sanctioning, 'command and control' model of corporate enforcement to the compliance-orientated regulatory model. It is also unique in locating this shift in its broader sociological and jurisprudential context. As such, the distinctive contribution of this volume is not in the analysis of corporate or white-collar crimes but rather in its analysis of the emerging legal architecture which attempts to manage rather than punish crime. It provides a definitive account of a State at a critical stage of its economic development, having moved from an agrarian and protected society to a free-market globalised economy which is trying to cope with the negative aspects of increased corporate activity, having experienced an economic boom and depression in a remarkably condensed period of time.

Narrative nonfiction is always tricky to write well, but Kunerth pulls it off wonderfully with this perfectly paced novel. If this were a newspaper feature, I have no doubt it would be up for a Pulitzer. I couldn't put it down! A relatively short, very meaningful read; highly recommended.

A Riveting Cautionary Tale

The author took me deep into the lives of the teens who committed a heinous and ridiculous murder in such a way that I cannot get them out of my mind. Kunerth's creative nonfiction gives the reader a taste of each boy's family life, his need to fit into a group--any group, his naive bravado and recklessness and finally his evolution moving into middle age behind bars. We have all known boys like this. Turns out our parents were right when they said not to hang around with the wrong crowd. In Florida, that can get you a life sentence even if you are just an unwitting hanger-on. The teenage brain is on trial on many levels in Trout. The debate about how old you must be to be sentenced as an adult and the way it is handled from state to state and nation to nation comes down to this--it varies. What does not vary is the fact that the human brain takes a long time to form in the areas of impulsivity, reasoning and consequences. Add to that the increase of violent behavior when in groups and you find a powder keg of potential explosives during the high school years. Teens with absent or abusive families and a sense of hopelessness think they have little to lose. This cautionary tale should be read in middle and high schools across the country. And...if we can be a positive influence in a young person's life--let's do it.

This is a well-written, heavily researched book about juvenile crime. The story makes you really think about how your actions can change your life forever.

Karen Hagemann is the James G. Kenan Distinguished Professor of History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Weak, needed a better editor and reviewer

Unfortunetly, while there is much solid research within this book, the modern interpretation and analysis is too often manipulated to fit the preconceived conceptual narrative arc. Hageman does a good job in summarizing earlier material on this subject, but there are dozens of glaring minor errors that compund to create a false history. For example, the section on the Iron Cross medal is a rewriting of earlier books, notably Williamson and Boelke, but then degenerated into nonsense as the author attempted to cram factoids into her analytical template. To be very clear, the battle bars she ascribes to the iron cross award were in fact for the Prussian vampaign medal, were privately purchased and only the certificates allowing their wear were awarded by the federal Chancellory. Ascribing these bars as an example of promoting the nationalist symbol of Prussian glory is simply wrong. In fact, these bars were a direct result of lobbying by the Officers' Associations following a series of articles in the Militaerwochenblatt about British campaign medals and their iconic " battle bars". A small thing to be sure, but the lobbyists directly appealed to Germanys's rising sense of nascent world power status in their appeals (" We must adopt the British example in this matter, for to do less implies we are less and our beloved old soldiers are not worthy" etc.) . The campaign medals were imperial awards, not Prussian ones and that spoke volumes in Wilhelmenian Germany, as their precedence directly demonstrated dominant political power was located in Berlin, not elsewhere. This is just one example, but I can list dozens of other errors and misinterpretations.
