Get Ready to Change the Way You Manage Your Career and Watch It Take Off With This Book!

The amount of advice available about finding your career is as abundant as parenting advice, medical advice and fitness advice. A simple Google search shows 453,000,000 results that include untold amounts of links to "do your passion", "work at home", and "get your subscription here"! The problem is that most of the advice is out-dated and worthless, except for the job services selling their wares.
In this book Olivia Gamber approaches your career from outside the mold of "go to school, send out resumes, go to interviews, wait to be hired". The old approach of being good at your job is crushed in this sentence near the start of the book. "Unfortunately, just being good at your job isn’t enough in today’s highly competitive environment; you also have to build relationships, be able to navigate complex corporate matrices, and develop many other key skills."
Further, whether you're searching for your first job or you're a grizzled veteran seeking a change, here are sentences that really popped out at me early in the book. "Seventy-five percent of American workers are not engaged in their jobs. This is mainly because many people are passive when it comes to managing their careers. They think if they work hard, then everything will eventually work out for them. The truth is, success is not simply about working hard—it’s about working on the right things."

Stop Wasting Your Time Submitting 10 Resumes Per Day - This Gives You A Better Way

I enjoyed how Olivia offers a different set of career advice. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing advice to follow your passion to the promised land because it's just not like that for people. They don't know how to find their passion. And even when they can find it, they may have 3 major passions. Or one that has a market rate of $10,000 per year. That old (yet still so common) advice just gets people stuck. That's the great thing about this book. It's different from the "follow your passion" bandwagon.
She gives you a better approach for leading into your career transition with another focus.
I also love how she gets candidates unstuck by focusing on their marketing rather than their credentials. And she teaches you to stop wasting your time blasting out oodles of resumes. And she flips the purpose of a cover letter around to the WHY YOU part of the equation. Lots of great advice in here.

Fast, not without effort, but with a focused, crafted plan that will have you shaking your head, saying 'But of course. Why doesn't everyone land jobs this way?'
Ms Gamber has a vast amount of experience and has put in a vast amount of research to develop a working method for job hunting and especially job achieving.
Starting by clearing mental blocks that might be stalling your progress, she quickly moves into the nuts and bolts of targeting job titles and companies, doing in depth, and in house, research into these, and from there connecting with people already within your chosen industry.
From here it is a question of writing a resume and cover letter...but from the specific standpoint of marketing yourself, stating very clearly what you will be offering the company.
Written in a friendly, but extremely professional style, this book should be on every college program and in every library and bookshop in the section on career planning. Excellent.
