YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN

As we grow old many of us have forgotten about the turmoil we had in our lives as we entered our teen years and puberty; and it didn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl, both were essentially the same. We both found out making friends became different once out of grade school, and if we couldn’t make any we began to wonder what was wrong with us, is it or clothes.

We had to learn that with age came changes in the manner in which we approach people for the first time. We had to learn how we now needed to handle the situations he used to handle before with ease, we also needed to learn situations now to handle situations we never did before. And when we couldn’t, we would usually became depressed and withdrawn without knowing why, which far too often would have a negative on other aspects of our lives. We had no idea that what we had been suffering from had been our lack of self-esteem.

Ms. Lisa M. Schab, taking her years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker with a private counseling practice in the greater Chicago area, has “Self-Esteem for Teens.”

The intention of her book is to serve as a foundation where teens can begin to understand that they’re in control of their individual self-esteem, and eventually their own destiny. She does this not merely by talking about this subject matter, but by giving her teenage readers real-life situations they can associate their lives with, along with useful exercises designed a self-exploration of themselves.

The book has been divided into two sections; the first deals with the concept of self-esteem and it fundamental beliefs, and the second has the exercises to help the teen break out of their shells.

While this book is targeted for teenage reader, I believe many adults could benefit from this book as well. For helping others in finding their “lost” self-esteem, I’ve given this book 5 STARS.

This was a great book. It was organized in a way that was easy to know what to expect of it.
It used a simple language to explain its concepts. I liked the examples it had, very appropriate for the age target, and the wisdom tales were so beautiful.
It was divided in two sections. The first one, core beliefs, oriented to understand where self-esteem comes from and how it’s in our hands. And the second, power-filled choices that helps to understand how to deal with the struggles we find in life. Each section contains principles that are very clearly explain. The way the sections were divided in learn, explore, become and affirm was very enlightening

Even though it was oriented to teenage, I think it can be useful, not only to that group but to any other readers. The examples and general language might be oriented to a younger public, but the concepts were universal and any reader can get great knowledge from it.

It was a very insightful book, I think it is important that the person who read it it’s willing to work and to deal with difficult emotions. It is not a book to be read in a hurry, it’ll take time and effort to get something out of it, but I think it can be very useful in someone willing to do it.

Overall it was is a good book, but its possibility of success remains in the hands of the reader. I would recommended not only to teens, but also to people who work with them, maybe in an educational, social or any other ambit. I also think any reader, regardless the age, can benefit from it.

I Can`t Think Of A Better Spanish Book Than This One.

One of the first books I ever bought to learn spanish. This book was originally written in 1955 but has been updated, revised and expanded. It really does make spanish easy to learn but you must take the time to study the book at least an hour per day. The author`s method for teaching you Spanish is very effective and impressive even by today`s standards even though it was written in the 50s. If something is good, it`s good no matter when it was made. I have read and studied many, many spanish books in my quest to become fluent and this book is the first book I would recommend to any beginner or intermediate learner and even advanced spanish students will learn plenty of spanish grammer and vocabulary here. In fact, I recently bought myself a new copy and started studying it again. I wanted to refresh myself on the lessons contained herein and I find that I am being reminded of many words and expressions that I forgot about and I am learning lots of new spanish. That`s what inspired me to write a review and tell people about this most excellent book for starting your spanish education and working your way up to fluency.

I am disappointed with the author of this book

I am disappointed with the author of this book. First of all you should illustrates a South America flag and not a Spain flag in your book. Because our phonetic is totally different. Spanish language comes from Castilian and like always people want to devaluate the European Spanish culture. We have 29 letters in our alphabet (A,B,C,CH,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,LL,M,N,�,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z), each one have a different sounds. The author is using the same sound for the letter C, S and Z, big mistake. You are still using the same sound for B and V, another big mistake. Please these is so disrespectful for our culture. At least change book's cover and put a South American flag. Your cover is misleading people.

Font size has limits with the electronic version for kindle.

Text seems well planned (haven't gotten too far along yet!). I bought this for the kindle, so my review is on the electronic version of the book. The option to change font size does NOT work properly and if you make the font larger the display just runs out of sight. Changing the kindle to landscape helps a bit to get a larger view without each sentence running out of sight, but there are still limits to how big you can make the text. (Making the text larger is one of the best things about electronic formats - if your eyes are tired you can still read!) I was a bit disappointed in this, there does not seem to be any way to scroll over and see the rest of the text if you have enlarged the font (using kindle voyage). I have tried playing with options for margins and line spacing but nothing I have done allows the font to go beyond a certain size before it just cuts off the end of all the sentences of the page (instead of moving them down so you can continue reading).

But in Ascher's captivating book, The Works, the innards of New York City come alive. Wonderfully illustrated, the book combines text, maps, and other graphics to tell the story of the systems that keep America's greatest city running smoothly. How are traffic lights coordinated? How do potholes form and which areas have streets with the best "smoothness score"? How is mail processed? What happens when you flush the toilet? Ascher, who has a PhD in government from the London School of Economics and is now executive vice president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, dissects the colorful workings of all these systems and much more.

The Works contains a section on pretty much every aspect of the Big Apple's infrastructure. You'll learn the mystery of the shiny silver tanks that have become a familiar sight on New York streets. (They prevent moisture from damaging underground phone lines.) Ascher explains how the city's 23 million daily pieces of mail are processed. Kate Ascher received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in government from the London School of Economics and her B.A. in political science from Brown University. She is currently the director of development at Vornado.

Fantastic work

Imagine:

*an illustration of the special machinery used just to clean the ceiling of the Holland Tunnel.

*a sidebar on the "Poo-Poo Choo-Choo" that for years transported waste 2,000 miles (!) from NYC to a dump in Texas.

*a graphic showing payphone distribution density in all 5 boroughs.

*a drawing of the simple but effective interlocking bolts and cross-tie latching that keep the corrugated metal containers on barges connected to each other so upper containers don't slide off lower ones and fall into the water.

*a key to reading construction markings that crews spray paint on the streets.

Such drawings, historical tidbits, and facts are more abundant in this book than leaves in Central Park.

This book is exceptional. As the former Vice-chair of Manhattan Community Board 5 (greater midtown Manhattan), chair of its parks committee, and member of its land use and zoning committee, I can attest to the great value of Kate Ascher's remarkable accomplishment, "The Works." New York City's infrastructure--from garbage collection to traffic control; subway signaling to cable TV distribution among franchise-controlled territories--is one of the world's most multifaceted, and at times a curious mix of the high-tech and the antiquated.

Reviews suggesting that the text is for teenagers may be accidentally misleading. "The Works" by no means is for teenagers either *primarily* or *at the exclusion of* adults. Yes, the book--especially its more heavily-illustrated sections--will no doubt fire the imagination of many teens who have engineering, design, line drawing, architectural, historical analysis, or problem-solving aptitudes. (Have a teenager who loved Legos as a kid but has outgrown them? This book will probably make a good gift.) Just because the book is broad in scope and doesn't examine each urban work it covers with the detail of a textbook for electrical engineering students at M.I.T. doesn't make it merely for adolescents.

If you enjoy TV shows on The Science Channel or Discovery, shows like "Building the Ultimate," if you are a history trivia buff, if you just like looking at diagrams or line drawings of machinery and equipment, of you're fascinated by cities, or if it is simply the cast that you love New York City, this is a great book, and I highly recommend it.

learn how it all works--with diagrams!

This book has not left the coffee table. Everyone who has come over picks it up and inevitably remarks, "Oh, so that's how it works! I always wondered how they timed the traffic lights" or some such comment. This is a book you can return to again and again--one day it's telecommunications, the next, sewage. It contains so many answers to questions you never knew you had.

After reading "The Works," I now walk around New York with a completely different awareness of the incredible infrastructure that quietly undergirds the city: I constantly notice the design of fire hydrants, street signs, and man holes; I know what a "sidewalk neckdown" is; I understand how my water gets to me from the Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskills through those crazy aqueducts (and they ARE crazy! they have a submersible submarine that perouses that thing for leaks!).

This book is a perfect gift for any man/boy/girl/hippo who likes to know how things work and likes to see them diagrammed in beautiful, scrumptious illustrations. I am one of these people.

But perhaps most importantly, this book made me forgive those terrible yellow trash trains that pull into subway stations late at night and immediately mean you will be waiting twenty more minutes for your train. I used to fear them. Now I know what they do. I forgive you, yellow trash trains.

Excellent Reference - Incredible Graphics

I am a licensed professional civil engineer that worked for the Philadelphia Water Department for 10 years and I found this book to be an excellent piece of work. This book would be a great reference for anyone ranging from a high school student to an engineer/architech/planner. The book focuses on New York City so people from the northeast USA may find some of the topics hit close to home. However, the principles and diagrams in the book apply to most cities. One of the best book I've bought in a while!

Song of Power

_There is an elegant, powerful simplicity to this epic tale, no matter what language you read it in. The symbols transcend both language and time. There is nothing contrived here. Such a tale could not be conterfeited by a modern mind.

_At the center of the entire epic is Vainamoinen, the singer at the world's dawn. Here is the archetype for the wizard- the first and greatest among shamans. Before Merlin, before Taliesin, before Math, before Manannan, there was Vainamoinen, Eternal Seer.

_Something real and vital carries over even in translation. Reading this book on a cold winter's night you can taste the sea and smell the forest. You can identify with the characters even though they have godlike powers, because they also have trades that they live by (Vainamoinen is a boatbuilder, Ilmarinen a smith, Joukahainen builds his own crossbows, etc.) These Godlike beings lived simple lives close to the earth. And simple wisdom is powerful wisdom. Yet, there is also so much more of the old, deep legends and symbols buried in these lines. You can tell that they were preserved long after the long lines of singers had ceased to know their original meanings.

_The ancient Finns believed in the power of words, and the greater power of songs. There is still power here. Or as the epic says:

Words shall not be hid

nor spells be buried;

might shall not sink underground

though the mighty go.

Clear layout, easily navigable

I was really pleased to see that this version of the Kalevala has the correct line breaks instead of having it all run in succession. It makes for a very legible version. I also like that the table of contents links directly to the different poems making it very easily navigable.

get another printing

Don't get me wrong; I love the Kalevala and I'm a big fan of Crawford's translation. But this particular printing has been very poorly executed. (I should've been suspicious when I saw Lonnrot's name misspelled on the cover.) The text is full of careless spelling and punctuation errors, and it's not formatted in lines as the poetry was originally. It'll do fine for reading, but it makes a poor addition to one's library.

About the Author
Anita Ganeri is an award-winning author of information books for children. Educated at Cambridge University, she has written more than 300 books, including the best-selling 'Horrible Geography' series (Scholastic Children's Books) which won a 2009 Blue Peter Book Award. She writes widely on animals and the natural world. A recent title for Raintree, A Day in the Life of Rainforest Animals: Capybara, has been shortlisted for a Maryland Blue Crab Award 2012. Anita lives in the north of England with her husband, children and assorted pets.

Great book for children on caring for bunnies.

We bought this book for our 8 and 9 year old grandchildren before we gave them their bunnies. They loved the book and learned quite a bit. It was also an easy read for them.

Bunny Book for young child.

Cute book. This doesn't go very deep into rabbit care. I bought it before we got our rabbits. My daughter who is 7 is able to read it on her own and it taught her a few things she didn't know about rabbits.

About the Author
Victor Thorn founded Sisyphus Press in the fall of 2000, and is the author of twelve books, as well as ten other chapbooks. Understanding biblical true history strengthens your believe in Immanuel

This book presents an intricate linkages between historic events and stories, in a biblical context, in a way that really makes you think on the truth. It must have been written by a very literate and intelligent writer.

Especially the "truths" of the Old Testament, usually taken from Sumerian, Egyptian or Indian sources, neatly rewritten for Israel, are taken into question.

What remains after reading this book is enormous respect for the author and a sense for what you still can believe of the Bible, and this strengthens your belief in this way.
Especially the words of Jesus/Jeshua/Immanuel become more the single source of truth, and his truth sets you free.

great process but...

The author is a better engineer than a writer. Some of the explanations were a bit unclear. However, the functional analysis process will be invaluable for applying geometric tolerances and functional feature controls on drawings.

An Interesting Approach...

The FAST method is an interesting problem solving approach for almost any situation. While the book is quite detailed and almost pedantic on the approach itself, it provides some very good ideas for how to structure and execute a detailed and creative problem solving approach.

Development of FAST with project examples

FAST Creativity and Innovation speaks to both the expert practioner and the novice. The book can be divided into two main segments. The first segment discusses how Charles Bytheway developed the methodology. The second covers four tangible project examples and one abstract example.

As a practioner of the FAST methodology, what I gained most from reading this book is an understanding of the way Mr. Bytheway thought as he developed FAST diagrams. His process is to switch roles constantly. In other words, think about the subject from several different perspectives. One example he gives to illustrate this concept is when he was teaching the how-why logic using the example "prevent highjacking". What he did throughout the discussion is he put himself in the shoes of the pilot, then the passenger and finally the airline president. This role playing gave him new insights that helped stimulate his creativity.

If you are an expert on FAST diagramming I would recommend this book to learn the development and genealogy of this important Value Engineering & Analysis tool. If you are a novice I would recommend this book because you will learn the FAST process from the creator of the methodology as well as some good examples of how to apply it.
