Thirty years of investigations on the chemistry and biology of non-natural nucleic acids have provided us with a wealth of new information, ranging from a deeper understanding of the parameters that influence nucleic acids with cellular factors. There is no part of the nucleic acid structure that has not been touched by chemists, and every chemical modification has resulted in an altered property. The nucleic acid structure, as originally defined by the Watson-Crick double helix, has now been expanded into an entire landscape of new structures adopted by artificial pairing systems. Countless strategies have been developed for the chemical synthesis of these modified nucleic acids. The resulting polymers have found applications in diagnostics, therapeutics, biotechnology, catalysis, sequencing, and nanotechnology, and have had a major impact in the quest for a better understanding of the origin of life. There is hardly another area in bioorganic chemistry that has contributed so much to progress in biology throughout the last decades.

About the Author
Martin Egli studied chemistry and received his doctorate in organic chemistry and chemical crystallography at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Z?rich, Switzerland. He has conducted research on the structure and function of native and artificial nucleic acids at the ETH, MIT, and Northwestern University, and currently holds an appointment as Professor of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

Piet Herdewijn is Professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, and head of the laboratory of medicinal chemistry at the Rega Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. and habilitation from the same university. He was a postdoctoral fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at the University of Konstanz. He has conducted research in bioorganic and medicinal chemistry, mainly in the field of nucleosides, nucleotides, and nucleic acids, at the University of Leuven, the University of Ghent, and the Universit? d'Evry-Val-d'Essonne.

About the Author
With more than 35 years of experience in applied engineering in the aircraft and automotive industries, Vukota Boljanovic has performed extensive research in development and manufacturing engineering, including the impact of design modification on tools, dies, and processes selection, aircraft assembly and inspection. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and worked in Europe in both academia and industry -- as a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and as Vice President for Research and Development for an aircraft company where he oversaw industry and government funded research on a variety of manufacturing topics. The author of two books, including Sheet Metal Forming Processes and Die Design (Industrial Press, 2004) and numerous technical papers, Boljanovic has been recognized by the aircraft industry and academia for several of his contributions to manufacturing processes. Before recently retiring in Knoxville, Tennessee, he spent five years working in the American automotive industry.

Great beginners book for die making

I have minimal machining experience, mostly self taught, and this book opens up the process of creating a die extremely well. I have only gotten through a few chapters but the illustrations are very good, the text is easy to follow and clear.

Great book, from my admittedly novice point of view... but I have learned a lot.. and thats the point of this book.

Good, but nothing advanced

Good overall, but no advanced information on syntax or special situations or designs. Screenshots and interpretations are helpful. Just don't expect anything too detailed. Would probably be helpful for MA students and beginning PhDs. As a doctoral candidate, it didn't quite include everything I had hoped. Still, useful and it'll stay on my bookshelf to be pulled out now & again when I'm working with unfamiliar but basic designs or writing up results. Does a nice job including assumptions for the model, how to check them, and how to interpret them--without too much jargon :)

Anyone wanting to use SPSS just MUST get this book - especially if you are working on your dissertation! She makes it easy and understandable with her step by step process. Unless you are a super-sophisticated statistician, you will be so glad you got this book! I have recommended it to my other doctoral cohorts and they agree with me - even my chairperson of my committee who is a statistical genius highly recommends it!

"SPSS Survival Manual" VS "Discovering Statistics using SPSS for Windows"

I will have to say this one, "SPSS Survival Manual" is the winner.

I've owned this book and a few others on SPSS and or multivariate data analysis for several years. However, a friend of mine recently called me and asked me how to do a few less ordinary things in SPSS. After spending some time on the phone with him I decided to look back at these books and suggest/give one to my friend.

I think the "SPSS Survival Manual" by Julie Pallant is somewhat of an easier read for the graduate student or market researcher who wants to quickly look up a certain how-to topic for SPSS.

"Discovering Statistics Using SPSS for Windows" by Andy Field, on the other hand goes into more detail on the statistics behind the techniques in SPSS. This one reads a little more like a text book though and can be a bit dry/technical unless this is your thing.

I tested the two by seeing which would do a better job of explaining how to conduct a Factor Analysis (PCA) in SPSS. "Discovering Statistics..." by Andy Field would have lost my friend right away, and by page three or four is listing formulas and quadrant plots. "SPSS Survival Manual" by Pallant on the other hand got into the `how to' part rather quickly with clear to follow examples.

If you're like my friend/more into getting it done quickly and correctly without getting bogged down with the academic detail, then definitely purchase the "SPSS Survival Manual".

If on the other hand you're not scared of a little extra math/statistics and have the extra time, you may want to think about "Discovering Statistics".

However, for the hard core multivariate analytics people, neither of these books will due. I would suggest something like "Multivariate Data Analysis" by Hair, Anderson, Tatham, & Black. This goes a few steps beyond Andy Fields Book.

Charu C. Aggarwal is a research scientist at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. A fellow of the IEEE and the ACM, he is the author/editor of ten books, an associate editor of several journals, and the vice-president of the SIAM Activity Group on Data Mining. Dr. Aggarwal has published over 200 papers, has applied for or been granted over 80 patents, and has received numerous honors, including the IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Award and EDBT 2014 Test of Time Award. Every photo inspires better technique

So many great things to say about Advanced Rock Climbing, but for starters, the book is a standout, because Donahue incorporates his beautiful photography into a clear and simple narrative. This helps the reader understand everything so much better! Not to mention making the book inspiring and engaging. These are not reactions generally expressed about a book on techniques. The next thing that struck me was how his stories and anecdotes allow the reader to relate to his advice, regardless of experience or skill level. I told my step-daughter to read the chapter on belaying before we went out for her first belaying instruction. It's not that she needed to know the nuanced techniques for providing a soft catch to a smaller leader on her first day of instruction, but the details gave her a fuller appreciation for the role of the belayer. She better understood the basics, because the book went beyond the basics with story-telling that she could relate to (even if only in her imagination). The same can be said for the other chapters.

(Jun 24, 2014) A common-sense, step-by-step guide written by a man who, in 1993, started a tour business in a remote Arizona city and operated it profitably for 19 years. During those 19 years, the author and his wife escorted 171 tours and cruises, with emphasis on the Western U.S. but including destinations in all parts of the world. Total passenger count on those tours was 7,315, (an average of 43 paying travelers on each tour) with all departures from Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The business developed a strong following with a high percentage of repeat, senior adult customers. The business was home-based with only the author and his wife as employees. The author sold the business in 2012 and the new owners have conducted over twenty tours and cruises while the business continues to make a healthy profit. This book is NOT a theoretical text book. It is a guide based on the actual experience of the author, who started the business without any prior experience in the tour business. The Bartlett's were able to sustain the business over 19 years by providing excellent tours and cruises with an emphasis on great customer service. In addition to over 180 pages of sound advice and guidance, there are more than 50 pages of illustrations showing actual tour itineraries, pricing spreadsheets, sales brochures, flyers, letters, website pages, terms and conditions and customer letters that can be used as templates in starting your own tour business. About the Author
Gordon R Bartlett was born in Pomona, California in July 1938. He has a BS in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He has been married to Patty for 53 years and they have a daughter and son and six grandchildren. He joined IBM in 1963 as a marketing representative and spent his 28-year career in computer sales and sales management, retiring in Tucson, Arizona in 1991. The author and his wife relocated to Lake Havasu City, Arizona in early 1993 and began their tour business in May, 1993 with just 9 passengers in a rented van. On their sixth tour in December of that year, they escorted 46 passengers in a chartered bus, and never looked back! Mr Bartlett has been active in the community and has been a Rotarian for over 38 years. The author and his wife continue to live in Lake Havasu City, Arizona

This has lots of information but, more like a personal journal of how he and his wife started this business in his area. It is beneficial as a beginner book to get you familiar with what you will need to do if you wanted to do this on the side as a business. But, a lot of the information is discouraging. But, a good place to start.

An Excellent Practical How-To Guide...

Gordon Bartlett's how-to book for setting up and operating a profitable tour business contains a wealth of practical information and has demystified the group tour business for me. I was always curious about how one would go about starting and operating a tour business and now I know, thanks to Gordon! His material is very well organized and walks you through the process, from initial idea to conducting the actual tour. His "15 Steps to Your First Tour" is a point-by-point how-to checklist for setting up and running a tour. The Illustrations contained in the Appendix are invaluable real-life samples of all of the working documents that will be needed at the various stages of a tour. This book has given me a complete understanding of everything involved in planning and operating group tours, to the point where I am seriously considering getting into the business. In my opinion, Gordon has created an excellent turnkey practical guide for anyone interested in getting into the tour business.

Excellent Resource and Easy Read

Of all the similar books I've bought (while researching this as a business opportunity), I enjoyed this one the most and learned a lot. Written from a personal perspective, this is an easy read, and a great how-to resource. I've traveled with tour groups many times and there are lots of situations I can think of that make me NOT want to do this business, most dealing with difficult people who signed up for the trips, but made it miserable for others. Bartlett touches on those topics, and it sounds like he dealt well with the situations on his tours. I'm not sure how well I would do in the same situations, but it was nice to read about his adventures (experiences ; ) as a tour operator.
