A guide but everything has to be modified to your specific Cooker Size

This is a very difficult topic to write about. The size of your Thermal Cooker has a major impact on the recipes that you use and how you approach preparing meals. I found this helpful as a guide and provide inspiration to attempt some similar meals it was necessary for me to modify every recipe since my thermal cooker was not the same size as the authors. I hope that there will be follow-on books that will go well beyond the simplistic approach provided in this publication.

Advanced, but very worthwhile anthology

This is an anthology of 41 essays concerning a wide number of topics concerning Celtic Studies, from the bronze age to Modern times. Religion, economy, boat-building, town structure, metalworking, art, and so forth are discussed in some depth. Celtic Christianity is further discussed as are the survival prospects for the current Celtic languages.

This is a mammoth tome-- the essays total over 800 pages of information, and while there is some variation in quality among the essays, this is to be expected.

More than this would not be possible in a book covering so much material. However, I will go into a little more detail on one specific topic that I found in this book: the implication of the arrival of the iron age. The typical historical narrative goes something like this: One day, our stone age ancestors discovered how to smelt copper. Eventually they learned how to mix it with other things to make harder alloys like arsenical and tin bronze. As they developed their technologies they learned how to smelt iron, and because iron is so much superior to bronze it quickly took over. There are some things that have bothered me for a long time about that theory, including the fact that we have small numbers of iron artifacts made by otherwise bronze-age cultures in the Pontic-Caspian Steppes (see The Horse, the Wheel, and Language: How Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World for more on that topic).

This essay introduces a few ideas which I think are crucial to solving that problem. Instead of discussing progressions of smelting techologies, the author addresses the economic impact and required technological changes in switching from bronze to iron. The detailed discussions of bronze vs ironworking techniques plus the discussions of general availability of iron vs copper and tin allow me to understand this shift as primarily economic rather than technological in nature (technological changes were required but they were more lateral changes than upgrades per se).

Every other essay in this book is similarly fascinating and thought provoking. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who already has a grounding in this area and is looking for more advanced reading material.

An excellent reference and in depth look at celtic research

This book is chock full of information. The articles are organized according to subject matter. I like the book because it gives a wide discussion of many differing aspects of celtic historical research. I have used it extensively to flesh out characters and background in writing and discussion with others with same interests as myself in celtic history. I would reccommend it wholeheartedly to any scholar in this area of research.

Purchased this book for my class of small group communications, it is a very good bood as it covers what one needs to know in small group communications, the chapters are clean but full of good information to help you become better in coimmunicating in small groups. The book has some very good case studies for you to work on and see what the results can be. It does the job very well for the course that it is used for.

Hip Hop Innovator turns SPIRITUAL - BRILLIANT - 5 Stars

I loved this book. I have written well over a hundred reviews for Amazon, and I have read 8,000 books in my lifetime. I simply cannot tell you how much I enjoyed Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All. Very simply, a book like this has influence, and it can help you change from where you are, to where you want to be. The author Russell Simmons is known as the godfather of Hip-Hop. He didn't rap himself, but he created Def Jam Records, a leading label in the industry and ultimately brought to life many of the rappers you know today, including Public Enemy, LL cool J, Ludacris, and Jay-Z. The man has made a couple of hundred million starting with nothing. He is therefore someone who should be listened to seriously. He doesn't just talk the talk, he has walked the walk.

In this book Simmons takes us through what he views as his spiritual journey after taking the business world by storm. The title Super Rich may not be appropriate because most of us would think we are talking about money, but he is not. Super Rich to Simmons involves spiritual richness. It involves the state of consciousness you are currently in and how to transform yourself, so that you can see the miracles of life unfolding right there in front of you. As the author likes to point out, you don't need money and toys to be truly happy.

The key to life is to break free of the boundaries that you have either imposed on yourself, or allowed to be imposed on you by others. Get rid of the constraints or feelings of the need for money and toys. Keep in mind this is coming from a man who lived in a 50,000 square foot house. He's telling you to give it up, and get with a new program. You're already rich if your SPIRIT IS RICH. He believes that each of us has a gift given to us by God. It is crucial to identify your gift, and pursue it in every way possible. If you do not pursue YOUR gift, you will suffer. It's as simple as that. But wait, there's more. You must take every opportunity to share your gift with the world, and don't worry about receiving money for it. The money will come. It is the residual product of the sharing of your gift with everyone who passes through your life.

There's just one more absolutely vital point that I think he's got nailed down. If he was sitting with you in a room and looking at you right in the face, he would tell you to STOP MAKING EXCUSES. You have to go do what it is you are supposed to be doing, and only YOU know what that is. So go pursue your happiness, and forget about pursuing the money. Time is short, and life is not a dress rehearsal. There are no second acts, and thank you for reading this review.

A Spiritual Style Guide for Success that Uses the 'N' Word?

Overall, I enjoyed this book and found some great nuggets of wisdom and inspiration. That being said, I found myself getting hung up (or tripped up) with Russell's frequent use of the 'N' word throughout the book. It was distracting and took away from the impact the book could have had on me. One of Russell's themes is that we are all from the same devine source, try not to judge or label others. Then, the 'N' word pops up and completely destroys the meaning. He even uses the word when telling a great story from Eastern spiritual tradition. It doesn't fit/work. Now I realize that I may not be Russell's target audience (I'm a white 30 something), however, the book trys to 'bridge' the gap and bring people together. The use of the 'N' word gave me a sense of separation.

If you think this book is a step-by-step guide to material success, or business, you'll be disappointed. Instead, Simmons will teach you his method of success that brings you true riches and inner peace. True riches being defined as finding your hidden potential, making a positive impact on the world, and being happy with life. However, learning the secrets that lead you to true riches, will also manifest itself in business, financial, and personal success. You will see that when you take the focus off your own success, and care about the success of others, that positive things will happen in your life. You will find favor with others and doors of opportunity will open.

You may not agree with his personal spiritual journey, or the advise he shares in his book, but the book has a way of halting the fast-paced world we live in, and it will help you to think, and focus on the things that matter the most. No matter what your religious affiliation, I think you will walk away with a need to adjust your priorities and goals. Money will become a tool to do good, and those that give will get more to do more for the world. As this cycle grows, you may find yourself one day among the SUPER RICH.

Brilliant book, I found the title interesting
It's a great book which helps you become more authentic and understand more about the important things. It describes procrastinating things. It tells you stories about other people experiences which followed their own instinct and were loyal to themselves becoming people of success.
We tend to forget about our essence and try to look like others which make us become regular people and most of the cases unhappy.
This book has just become a night table book, so every night before sleep I can review different points and I can refresh the important points within it. There is too much wise in it.
I do recommend it specially if you have some points in your life which you don't like but you can identify what's going wrong.. this book will make you get things clear and it will help you in changing them.

lm feeling really identified with this book, l travelled for 6 months and was funny because l totally agree when the author says about getting a job related to it, its funny because when you do or try to do your best and enjoy life everything looks better and take in place.

For some time l have the feeling that lm not doing enough things for my future but as the tittle says unleash your talent and change your life. Of course l will plan to do a blog or a short book about my adventures because is something that l love.

lt could be that when we get older we care about more thnings than before, right now its so difficult to just stop and begin again with your life. But l liked the way believes about childhood and also dreams.
Very positive book that hope more people can enjoy.

About the Author
Robert Beer has studied and practiced Tibetan thangka painting for thirty years, including five years of study with master artists Jampa of Dharamsala and Khamtr�l Rinpoche of Tashijong. Beer is one of the first Westerners to become actively involved in this art form. Over the last two decades he has concentrated on an extensive series of iconographical drawings depicting the major deities, lineage holders, and symbols that occur in the spectrum of Tibetan art.

Not to be confused with Beer's Encyclopedia

This Handbook is an excellent reference book, handsomely published by Shambhala, and affordable. BUT...do not confuse this with Beer's Encyclopedia of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols and Motifs. This Handbook is NOT a paperback version of the Encyclopedia. The 400-page Encyclopedia goes into more detail, has additional text, and provides the reader with many, many more pages of drawings. I confused the two and thought I would save some money by buying the paperbound. Nope, it's a much abridged version. If you can afford the Encyclopedia, it is well worth Amazon's price.

Quintessential for its Quality

This revised edition of Beer's compilation of Tibetan symbols is indispensable as a student of Tibetan studies. Although I am not focused religion, the iconography if religious figures and themes comes up often enough that I had extensively relied on Google previews of the book and finally decided to buy a copy and save myself the screen time. The Handbook is a little better organized and has more of the material that I need compared to the earlier Encyclopedia. Beer's images are clear and show a considerable amount of the possible variety, much easier to learn to recognize form than in the complexities of fully colored thangka. In terms of just needed a simple answer and enough background to start understanding and researching elements of iconography this book is the perfect launching point.

The book is made with nice paper and the illustrations are nice and clear. Shipping with Prime was great.

Infinite beauty

Beer is a genius of Tibetan symbolism and a master of the art. If Tibetan art is a passion of yours, or you are an aspiring Buddhist this is a must for you. He also published a larger hardcover volume which this was adapted from. The hardcover book is much more comprehensive, larger and quite beautiful. The quality of printing is excellent. Beers ability to replicate the repetitive images is almost robotic and mind blowing in his precision. Just look at the rolling waves or cloud formations..for pen and ink drawings that are vibrant and alive on the page. The essence of Tibetan Buddhist multiverse perception. It is infinitely enjoyable and informative as he defines all of the images meanings and the essence of what they evoke. Just looking at his drawings evokes a peaceful, meditative and introspective experience. For a student or artist studying Buddhism or just art, this will educate and enthrall. It gives definitive meaning and helps clarify the imagery in one volume unlike any other writings i have found. I do recommend this book as well as the larger comprehensive volume..also available on Amazon. Om mani padme hum.

Sufism Debugged

Shams does not mince words. He is also an excellent teacher of exegesis (in his own special way). If he doesn't manage to get under your skin and push off the mask, then it is not for you. My softcover copy has survived a close encounter with a hard surface. Pay special attention then to who is his Master, after you make up. And note that there is a program for your instruction, should you care to follow it. If you don't fall in love with Sham after reading this book, then it is not for you. (And if this review is too cryptic, then it is not for you.)

Here's an extended quote, an entry entitled 'Those who possess the Kernet' (which is followed by the entry "Ali and Muhammad').

Begin quote:

The universe of Truth is an infinitely wide expanse. According to some, it is extremely clear and simple. For some it is very difficult, while according to some it is very easy--yet because of this easiness the remain bewildered. Those who speak about such things, hesitate here.

In the Hadith it has been said, "The Qur'an has seven levels of meaning of both the outer (zahir), the inner (batin), and the inner of the inner." Of these meanings, the scholars know the outer meanings, the saints know the inner meanings, and the prophets know the hidden meanings with the inner meanings, the fourth "none knows but God." So, how can the children of Adam benefit from this? There are many secrets within the hadith as there are in the Qur'an. As God Most High has said, "His heart did not deny what he saw .."[53.11]

They also hesitate to speak about the meaning of the subtle point, "What no eye has seen and no ear has heard."

This book is generously footnoted with highly informative content. A short introduction is followed by the main body of the text: a series of entries, ranging from short snippets to a few pages. It is clearly a labor of love, and a very valuable gift to the English reader. Many thanks to Refik Algan and Camille Adams Helsinki for their efforts. Highly recommended.

An agnostic loves it

At one time I had what I thought was a passing interest in Sufism. I am an agnostic, but as such I think it is my duty to delve into and explore different faiths and spiritual traditions. (Saying you don't know doesn't mean you stop looking) This book made a "passing interest" into complete admiration for a spiritual tradition that is rich, witty, wild, exuberant, frustrating, insane, mystical, and Transcendent. I have heard Sufism called the zen Buddhism of the western tradition. I think that makes sense. But there is something about this book that speaks to me in a way that no other book has. I don't know why. But that's the way it goes.

David Starkey is Professor of English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College.� He is the editor of two collections of creative writing pedagogy, Teaching Writing Creatively (1998) and Genre by Example: Writing What We Teach (2001), and he has been active in all four genres.� His poetry collections include Adventures of the Minor Poet (2007), Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (2006), and Fear of Everything (2000).� His fiction has appeared in American Literary Review, Rio Grande Review, Sou’wester and in the anthology Blue Cathedral: Contemporary Fiction for the New Millennium.� His creative nonfiction has been published in Cimarron Review, Gulf Stream Magazine, Tampa Review, and in the book Living Blue in the Red States (2007), which he edited.� His plays have been produced in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis, Toronto, and elsewhere.

Could Have Been Great

There aren't a lot of creative writing texts that cover all four genres out there, and "Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief" seemed a promising, inexpensive option to assign for my college creative writing class. The discussions of craft are solid and each section is followed by a checklist that my students found useful. Each chapter includes three opening examples that the craft lessons refer back to in order to illustrate their points, and I found this to be very clear and effective. My two main complaints have to do with the selection of plays and editorial problems with the book. There are only 7 plays in this book (by contrast, there are 26 poems, 14 stories, and 13 essays). I'm guessing the decision to include so few plays was made because the plays take up more pages than the entries in the other genres, but the result is a very limited (and somewhat lackluster) selection of dramatic works. A more annoying issue was the rather embarrassing extent of typographical errors in this book. There are small typos here and there, and at one point, a whole paragraph is repeated verbatim. The complete table of contents in the front matter is correct, but there is also an abbreviated table of contents inside the front cover, and this table of contents contains the incorrect page numbers! Besides being irksome, these typos make it hard to make the case to students that they should treat their writing with care and precision. Why do so when the very textbook they've paid almost $40 for appears not to have been proofread?! With a better/wider selection of plays and some good proofreading/copyediting, this could have been a fantastic book, so it's really too bad.

A Bit Better Than Adequate

I'm using this for a beginning level creative writing class. I like how quickly each section covers the basics, allowing students more writing time than reading time. I find, however, that I have to supplement with additional samples and information, particularly in the creative non-fiction section. The material on poetic forms is well done. Overall, it's relatively inexpensive, unlike many creative writing textbooks, clear, and helpful.

Strange notation.

I'm most of the way though an upper-level complex analysis course where we've used this book. The book is not bad. The sections follow a nice order, and the book is much more readable compared to Ahlfors, which I have as well. I find that Ahlfors can be very unfocused, where Palka follows a more structured pattern of presenting material. Each section contains a surprisingly large number of exercises which vary from routine computation to non-trivial proofs. Many sections have plenty of figures as well, which help show the geometry behind the complex plane. Overall, I've had a nice experience using this book, and would recommend it to other students in the future.

That is not to say that Palka is without faults. Our professor rearranged the order of the book, slightly, moving Mobius transformations close to the beginning of the course. This added insight actually made a fair number of the exercises in the middle chapters (mostly concerning Cauchy's thereoms and such) easier. Palka is also prone to being overly chatty, to the point where the the content gets watered down by his verbiage.

Most aggravating, for me, is Palka's use of notation. He strays from the general path regarding most standard notation, and prefers to adopt his own. For instance, he uses "phi" for "emptyset", "~" for set difference, and several others. While these don't necessarily make any real fault in the book, it is annoying to have to translate Palka's notation. Also, the chapters are numbered with roman numerals, then individual sections and subsections start over from "1" every time. Exercise sections are numbered with the last section of the chapter--it's somewhat of a mess. A more straightforward Ch.sec.subsec would be less confusing.

Most of these remarks are merely esoteric, though, and as said, the book is overall quite sound. It's worth having for an undergraduate course as a complement to, or in lieu of, more popular books, such as Ahlfors.

Fantastic for self study

I agree that the exposition and proof's are both wordy, but for self study I found this invaluable. I took this course as a reading course, which means no lecture accompanies the course. I find most weeks, I can solve nearly all of the problems assigned by 1-3 readings of the chapter. This is in my opinion the best book I found to date for self study. However, the addition of solutions to selected exercises would be even better. I recommend the book for those wishing for a introduction to complex analysis, or those with some background and wishing to extend their background to include the material covered on most complex qualifying exams.

Good Secondary Text

This is a good text that covers somewhat more ground than either Ahlfors or vol. 1 of Conway, including a really nice, long section on conformal mapping. There are an astonishingly large number of exercises. The exposition is generally quite good, and the proofs are thorough and very detailed.
However, I would not want to use this as a primary text because it is too long-winded. Even the proofs have a lot of unnecessary verbiage. Put simply, it takes too damned long to read. I think the happy medium lies somewhere between the slick austerity of Rudin's analysis books and the overwritten style of Palka's book.
That said, I still think Palka's book is well worth having. You may never want to read it cover to cover, but I find it very useful to turn to when I am confused by other texts, or when I want a more detailed explanation of a given topic. Chances are that I'll find it here. Also, there are lots of good concrete examples, especially in the sections on residue techniques for integration and conformal mapping. And you will never run out of interesting exercises if you have this book around.
So what is the best primary text for complex analysis? Good question, and I don't have a good answer. Conway's book is pretty nice but unexciting. Ahlfors' is generally good but requires extremely careful reading (sometimes between the lines) to catch all the nuances; it also feels a bit old-fashioned for my tastes. The recent version of Narasimhan's book, with the large collection of expository exercises by Nievergelt, is much more efficient, sophisticated, and challenging than the others and looks like it will serve as a very good reference/second course after learning the material elsewhere.
