So Sierra lives two lives: her life in Oregon and her life at Christmas. And leaving one always means missing the other.

Until this particular Christmas, when Sierra meets Caleb, and one life eclipses the other.

By reputation, Caleb is not your perfect guy: years ago, he made an enormous mistake and has been paying for it ever since. But Sierra sees beyond Caleb's past and becomes determined to help him find forgiveness and, maybe, redemption. As disapproval, misconceptions, and suspicions swirl around them, Caleb and Sierra discover the one thing that transcends all else: true love.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Sierra has grown up on her family's Christmas tree farm in Oregon, and for as long as she can remember, she has always lived two lives around Christmas: every year after Thanksgiving, her parents pack up their trailer and drive down to California to sell Christmas trees at their lot for the month of December. Even though her parents met as teens on the same lot, her father doesn't want her dating any of the boys who work there. Sierra is OK with this, figuring that she's not there long enough for a romance to be worth her time. And then she meets Caleb, a boy with a painful secret from his past that he's still trying to live down. At first, Sierra isn't sure if she should start a relationship with him, but the more she gets to know him, the more she realizes that some things are worth the risk. This is a sweet, light romance, perfect for holiday reading. While Caleb's secret is awful, it doesn't seem quite bad enough to merit the treatment he receives in his community. Side stories with Sierra's friends add some humor but are overall frothy. VERDICT This is more sugar in your peppermint mocha than you're expecting, but it's good nonetheless. Asher's fans will gravitate toward it.—Necia Blundy, formerly at Marlborough Public Library, MA

Review
“What Light…harks back to a simpler time of young adult storytelling with its linear first-person narrative and classic themes of forgiveness, hope, and the power of true love…there’s something beautiful about a novel done the old way, particularly when there’s enough heart to make you weep.”
—New York Times Book Review

“Asher’s gift for prose that packs an emotional wallop was apparent in his 2007 novel, the monster best-seller Thirteen Reasons Why…. Asher infuses his storytelling with a compelling sweetness and innocence; What Light casts the same warm glow as a room strung with twinkly Christmas-tree lights.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“From the author of Thirteen Reasons Why, What Light is one you won’t want to miss.”
—Buzzfeed

“What Light is a love story that make you want to turn on those Christmas carols early.”
—Bustle

"Asher has done it again. He gets into the heart of what is important in relationships, whether friendship or romance, and his characters are realistic and well developed. Teens will see themselves in these characters, and relate to them."
—Voice of Youth Advocates

"Certain to please readers seeking an escapist, feel-good holiday read. Asher’s follow-up to his best-selling debut is destined for lots of attention."
—Booklist

"This is a sweet, light romance, perfect for holiday reading."
—School Library Journal

"Charming and sweet, Sierra and Caleb’s budding relationship should suit readers looking for a wintertime romance that’s as cozy (and familiar) as candy canes and gingerbread during the holidays."
—Publishers Weekly

"Asher is a dab hand at capturing everyday situations and conversations; Sierra and her friends tease and quip in ways that are witty but not overly so, and Sierra’s frank talks with her parents have the tone of a mature, beloved only child who is used to being heard even as her parents set the rules."
—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

“What Light is a sweet, aching tale of first love and forgiveness. It's about second chances and learning to see others for who they really are. Sierra is only passing through town, as she and her family do every year, trying not to get too close to anyone, while Caleb needs to forgive himself for a single horrible act. As he says, everyone is allowed a bad day. But it's not until meeting Sierra that he truly believes it. I laughed, I cheered, I cried, and oh did I fall in love with Sierra, Caleb, and this exquisitely lovely story.”
—Jennifer Niven, New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places

This book deserves that special place on your shelf reserved for favorites you fall in love with.

Faced with moving south every year, Sierra's made the best of it. After all, while her family is selling Christmas trees down south in California, she's still in contact with her friends and school in Oregon. No one can really understand what it's like to travel and be with her family working ten hour days, selling Christmas trees and the holiday spirit to people in the same spot of the small town for almost thirty years. Although she's just in high school, the traditions are part of what she enjoys the most, besides visiting with her best friend in Oregon. When a boy comes to the lot and flirts with her, Sierra ignores him. When he comes back a second time and buys another tree, she's curious about him but her friend convinces her the best thing to do would be to forget him completely. He has a history that's dark and he's not worth the time or trouble. Over time, Sierra starts to know the real Caleb but the town still sees the boy with problems, including her parents.

The heart of this book is a story of how love can change you and make you stronger. It's also a story of first love and how braving the unknown takes you places you never imagined. It's about friendship and unspoken codes of honor, about broken friendships and family relationships. Written around Christmastime, it's a book to be enjoyed year round. Read, reread, shared, and so deserving of that special place on your shelf.

What Light
By Delta High School Library
What Light by Jay Asher is a clean, young adult romance that takes place during the Christmas season. This setting makes What Light perfect for a warm, cozy, winter read! Sierra and her family leave their Oregon tree farm and head to their California tree lot each year around Thanksgiving until Christmas. This might be their last year doing this, so Sierra wants to make it memorable. Her friends in Oregon miss her during this time, while her friend in California, Heather, loves Sierra being near. Heather wants to double date and is trying to find someone for Sierra, but Sierra takes care of that on her own when she meets and gets to know Caleb. There is a bad rumor going around about Caleb and something he did in the past. My curiosity kept me reading and I enjoyed the whole Christmas theme. The realistic kindness warmed my heart. Caleb introduces Sierra to his mom and sister in an awkward moment. The relationship between Caleb and Sierra struggles because of gossip, parents and the long distance between their homes and they have to learn how to handle all of these problems if they want to make their relationship work. A touching romance that's perfect for the holiday season or anytime you want to feel warm and cozy - 4.5 stars!

Don't Waste Your Time!!!!

Not Worth The time or Money. Very little character development in story and no real draw to keep you interested in finishing the story. I was expecting a lot more from this author, it was very hard to finish it. Nothing in the story that kept hooked to keep reading. I think part of the reason for not liking the story was I couldn't connect with the main character and the author did very little to develop the main character.
