How often does one say "awesome!" about a textbook?

I'm a professor of strategy, and have been teaching Strategic Management for undergraduates, MBAs, and executives (in and outsides the U.S.) for over 10 years, and never found a text that satisfied my desire to present top-notch material in a synthesized fashion. But I now have found this book--Frank Rothaermel's new Strategic Management text is really a brand-new text that makes a quantum leap forward in presenting cutting edge theory and examples leveraging the unique intersection of theory/concepts, empirical research, and practical application. Strategic management is about superior positioning for competitive advantage, and no other book on the market except Frank's has been able to position itself in this sweet spot. Not to mention the cutting edge examples that today's students can relate to (Facebook, Tesla Motors, Apple, BYD, Tata Group, and so on). Another great differentiator is that Frank wrote not only 12 MiniCases (great to get discussion started) but also 15 full-length cases that are perfectly integrated with the text to teach concepts and frameworks presented therein. The full-length cases also come with financial data already prepared in spreadsheets for ratio analysis, another first in the strategy textbook industry. Clearly, Frank's book is unique on many dimensions and has carved out a valuable, rare, and hard if not impossible to imitate strategic position in the textbook market combined with fully integrated and innovative example and exercises. It is not just a textbook but a new generation strategy teaching product that will make even novices look like rock stars. It makes you a BETTER teacher!

I'm a tenure track professor of strategy with many prior years of industry work experience and I have reviewed many textbooks trying to find a good match for my students at the undergraduate, masters and executive levels. Until this book, I have not been successful in this search.

I knew that I liked Frank Rothaermel's new textbook "Strategic Management" when I had a chance to review an early version of it myself. It has great examples and very crisp yet rigorous strategic concepts throughout the book. The text also has an entire chapter on innovation which I believe is quite important for our students to consider as they graduate and get into today's workforce. The book has a wonderful and unique chapter on three different lenses of viewing or measuring competitive advantage. I personally like the pithy chapter openers which not only relate to the material in each chapter but also have a `case closing thoughts' for each chapter to bring the ideas home for the students. The `strategy highlights' are another of my favorite features. They are excellent ice breakers for class discussions. Students love the examples of Threadless, Starbucks, Nintendo and Pixar and Frank has done a great job of tying the exemplar firm's to the tool and topics in each chapter.

What surprised me however was the degree that my students related to Dr. Rothaermel's textbook. Until using this text I have rarely if ever seen comments like this in the "what did you like about the course?" student evaluations... " The textbook was easy to read and had great current examples that made it easier to understand.", "Not only was the text extremely useful, but it applied to everything we did." , "the textbook was NOT boring, it included up-to-date information about companies that was very interesting". "The textbook actually enhanced the learning experience and helped emphasize the points learned in class with real live companies and how they used the tools to gain a competitive advantage." "It was one of the most interesting textbooks I've had in my college courses". Yes these are actual quotes from my student course evaluations.

Further, my actual course evaluation scores are UP when using this textbook. I've taught 16 sections of this course thus far and my average student evaluation is about 4.6 out of 5.0. However fall 2011 I had the chance to beta test Dr. Rothaermel's book and my student evaluation scores soared up to 4.91! Same course, same professor, different textbook.... You be the judge!

A rare find - a strategy book that works well in the classroom and in the field!

Strategic Management by Frank Rothaermel is a rare find - a great strategy book for the classroom, and an equally useful book for the manager/practitioner in the field. I spent over 20 years in the field working in corporations, small to medium sized business, and starting and running my own businesses. Rothaermel's book on strategy finally replaced my worn out copies of Michael Porter's books on strategy as my 'go-to books' that I used as my strategy guides at GE and AT&T in the field.

After completing my PhD in strategy I have used many textbooks at the undergraduate and graduate level. When the McGraw-Hill team shared with me that 'yet another' strategy book was coming out I admit I was skeptical. When I heard Frank Rothaermel was involved I agreed to review it and give it a try. I have had great success using the book the last two semesters in an undergraduate class of over 400 students, and with over 100 graduate students.

There are a number of good strategy books on the market - what gives this book a competitive advantage? In my opinion, and based on my experience using the book, there are several points: 1) It is clearly written, the concepts are logically connected together, and the mini-cases are well chosen for each chapter to illustrate key points. My students actually enjoyed reading the book! 2) Rothaermel does an excellent job integrating Porter's five forces/industry structure framework and the resource based view concepts from Barney - few books give such a balanced treatment of the two views that are fundamental to understanding strategy. 3) Frank includes a quantitative view of how to determine a firm's competitive advantage (see chapter 5 - if you are a follower of M. Porter, you know he is an economist and he insists that measures of competitive advantage must be quantified - Rothaermel does this nicely). All of these points apply to both the Concepts, and the Concepts and Cases versions.

If you need cases to go with the concepts, the Concepts and Cases brings 30 some full length cases of a wide variety to the reader - the cases are up-to-date and there are several for each chapter. I don't use more than one or two of the cases in the undergraduate course but I have them all to draw from (fortunately McGraw-Hill has a very easy way to customize a book and include just what you need). However, for a graduate course I use six to eight cases. There's even a nice guide that helps you select the cases that are a good fit for the topics. Again, I've found I can save my students some money using the custom create feature, and with 30 cases it will be a long time before I worry that the same case has been repeated. Also, for many cases, there are Excel spreadsheets available direct from the case data with firm data so you can drive the quantitative points of the analysis.

In summary, if you are looking for a very versatile and up-to-date book with a host of support materials, I strongly suggest you consider Rothaermel's Strategic Management by McGraw-Hill - this is a strategy book that has a clear competitive advantage over its rivals.

About the Author
Sunday Adelaja is the founder and senior pastor of the Embassy of God in Kiev Ukraine and the author of more than 300 books which are translated in several languages including Chinese, German, French, Arabic, etc. A fatherless child from a 40 hut village in Nigeria, Sunday was recruited by communist Russia to ignite a revolution, instead he was saved just before leaving for the USSR where he secretly trained himself in the Bible while earning a Master s degree in journalism. By age thirty-three he had built the largest church in Europe. Today, his church in Kiev has planted over a thousand daughter churches in over fifty countries of the world. Right now they plant four new churches every week. He is known to be the only person in the world pastoring a cross cultural church where 99% of his twenty five thousand members are white Caucasians. Answers, solutions and help!

Prior to reading this book, I wondered what else could possibly be written about the Kingdom of God. Evidently, a lot! What is most unique about this step by step guide to Kingdom living though, is that it seems to predict and then answer all the reader's Kingdom-related questions. That is, all except one: how has the church survived until now without such a comprehensive, easy to understand manual for a life devoted to the Kingdom of God? While most material I have come across on the Kingdom of God leaves a question mark next to the practical application of it, in Kingdom Driven Life the author skilfully dispels all such cloudiness with real-life examples, factual church history, current and future world events, the infrastructure of the Kingdom, comprehensible action points and much more. It does what a great book must be able to do, it cuts across religions, faiths, ethnicities, cultures etc. Everyone can understand and apply this essential wisdom.
In my opinion, Kingdom Driven Life is not really a book, it is more like a large dose of God's mercy sent to the church and all humanity in written form. Look around you, honestly compare the mark that the early church made on society to that made by the end-time church so far; is there a difference? Also observe current, pending and impending world events; does the church need a lifeline, does the world need solutions? Well, here they are. Do we need to don kingdom authority? Then read, feed and go lead!

An Explosive Delivery That Takes Christianity from Religion to Reality

This is a dynamic delivery that takes Christianity out of religion into reality. Christianity is redefined from my religious understanding. This is a punch on my comfort Christianity; waking me from slumber and challenging the genuineness of my commitment to Christ. I am called to roll up my sleeves and get into Christ's business of practical life change He came to effect in my world. Through this book my theology has been rearranged; I am released from the four walls of the church and located in the society to fulfill my role in changing it. I can see where I belong and have been given practical steps to start fulfilling my life. Thank you, Pastor Sunday for using this book to put our hands on the steering wheel of our society so we can undergo our personal life change and participate in changing it.

Rainbow Carrots and Chard
�
Taste the rainbow: Carrots come in an array of beautiful colors. For this striking side dish, we blanched a variety of colors just until tender and bright, then tossed them with a lemon vinaigrette and the color-coordinated stems of rainbow chard.

SERVES 4
�
1 pound small carrots, trimmed and scrubbed
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 bunch rainbow Swiss chard, stems trimmed (leaves reserved for another use)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, and � lemon, thinly sliced into rounds
1 teaspoon sugar
� cup extra-virgin olive oil
Fresh mint leaves, for serving

1. Prepare a large ice-water bath. Cook carrots in a pot of generously salted boiling water until crisp-tender, about 7 minutes. Transfer to ice bath until cool, then remove with a spider and pat dry.

2. Cook chard stems in boiling water until crisp-tender, about 4 minutes. Transfer to ice bath, drain, and pat dry.

3. Whisk together lemon juice, and sugar in a small bowl; season with salt and pepper. Add oil in a slow, steady stream, whisking until combined.

4. Combine carrots, chard, and lemon rounds in a large bowl. Toss with some dressing, then transfer to a platter. Top with mint and serve.

This book gets right down to the business of women's health problems, and how nutrition and vitamins may very well be the best ways to take care of them. Saul Case is experienced with orthomolecular medicine principles, having utilized them all her life. Orthomolecular medicine supports the taking of optimal amounts of vitamins, amounts that promote optimal health, not just the minimal amounts that prevent severe vitamin deficiency diseases. Saul Case knows what works. She backs it all up with evidence, and provides very straightforward instructions to her readers. At the onset, the author makes it clear that this is a "gal" thing, but at the same time, she lets the guys in on what they need to know that would aid the health of their partners.

Although, at times, there seems to be an ongoing battle between those in the nutrition and supplemental vitamin camp, and those in support of pharmaceutical medicine, Saul Case is not fully in one camp or the other. Rather, she maintains that women should be as informed as possible of what both sides advocate. Half-truths sell medicines and "healthful" supplements as well. This makes it all the more important that the information a woman gets is backed by evidence. Saul Case is well aware that readers want proof that vitamins and nutrition work, and with that in mind, her book provides a wealth of references and suggested reading.

In the post World War II days, the specialty of pediatrics flourished. Overall, it differed greatly from what we have today. The old way of doctors had its short comings just as the new way does. But one real plus was that there could be enough time spent in an office call or a well-check for both doctor and mother (the usual pediatric patient's spokesperson). Now, office visits are shorter, and one's doctor may not have had the time to get the "full picture." But, frankly, I never was privy to problems like yeast vaginitis or endometriosis. I "learned" about these disorders in medical school, but I certainly could not grasp what it would be like to suffer from such problems. Similarly, I learned about what resulted from the bite of the tset-se fly, but I never expected to be bitten. My empathy could take me only so far. Consider: a woman's doctor may be treating an illness they have never experienced, except for what they learned in a text book in medical school, or through witnessing such issues in their patients. The knowledge doctors have and can share with a patient based on such "non-personal" experience may not be all the information a woman needs when it comes to treating her own specific health condition. Women (and men) must be informed patients. There are times when an accurate medical diagnosis is needed, and that requires a visit to the doctor. But the patient should do her homework prior to the visit in order to be in a position to actively discuss her condition. Ideally, both patient and doctor learn from each other. Medicine and nutrition can complement each other. But, if a patient is rushed through a doctor's office visit with a cursory examination and just the dispensing of a prescription (or two), Saul Case suggests this can lead to unsuccessful results. Instead, the author recommends to the reader, without a show of animosity, to take the slip of paper with the prescription written on it, but not fill it--just yet. Before submitting to pharmaceuticals, first consider the benefits of orthomolecular medicine.

Helen Saul Case certainly makes a strong case for vitamins and nutrition. I can vouch for the fact that her health tips are sound. She addresses how to stay well, in addition to providing specific nutrition treatment advice for women's health issues. Her knowledge and the engaging, candid, and downright entertaining way she passes it on makes this book a "must" for all women.

Helen Saul Case did a great job of giving lots of good information, but then breaking it down into a format that is easy to grasp. She is also delivers the information with her personality, which makes for a more enjoyable read. This can also serve as a quick and easy reference book for what vitamins to take, etc. It is good reminder and encourager that you can be in control of your body and your health. I would recommend this book!

Alan W. Watts, who held both a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best remembered as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. Standing apart, however, from sectarian membership, he has earned the reputation of being one of the most original and “unrutted” philosophers of the twentieth century. Watts was the author of some twenty books on the philosophy and psychology of religion that have been published in many languages throughout the world, including the bestselling�The Way of Zen.�An avid lecturer,�Watts appeared regularly on the radio and hosted the popular television series,�Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life,in the 1960s. Who Are You?

I read this book when it was first published in 1966, re-read it after an unexpected opportunity to meet Alan Watts just before he died (in 1973), and then re-read it again recently after having recommended it highly to a close personal friend. Long ago, I became convinced that the nature and extent of any book's impact are almost entirely dependent on (a) the nature and extent of our life experiences when reading a book and (b) the nature and extent of our ability to absorb and digest whatever that book may offer. Watts's The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are offers an excellent case in point. Frankly, Watts's personal impact on me now is greater than were the first and second readings of his book. At the beginning of our brief encounter, I immediately sensed his stunning intellect and compelling decency. More impressive by far was a sense of his spirituality. It was most evident in his eyes and tone of voice. More then twenty years later, I re-read The Book. What follows is an admittedly clumsy attempt to share my thoughts and feelings about it.

First, with regard to the title and subtitle, Watts explains that "The Book I am thinking about [and later wrote] would not be religious in the usual sense, but it would have to discuss many things with which religions have been concerned -- the universe and man's place in it, the mysterious center of experience which we call 'I myself.' the problems of life and love, pain and death, and the whole question of whether existence has meaning has meaning in [in italics] any sense of the word."

With regard to the subtitle, Watts explains that there is no need for a new religion or a new bible. "We need a new experience -- a new feeling of what it is to be 'I.' The lowdown (which is, of course, the secret and profound view) on life is that our normal sensation of self is a hoax, or, at best, a temporary role that we are playing, or have been conned into playing -- with our own tacit consent, just as every hypnotized person is basically willing to be hypnotized. The most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are behind the mask of your apparently separate, independent, and isolated ego."

So, that was the book Watts was thinking about writing, and, the taboo to which he devotes most of his attention (directly or indirectly) throughout the book he eventually wrote.

What do I now think of this book? First, it retains its ecumenical spirit but in ways and to an extent I did not fully appreciate years ago. Watts is very respectful of all of the major religions, at least in terms of the common values they affirm; however, he also suggests (and I agree) that those values have been concealed by layer-after-layer of doctrine, policy, and procedure. Watts's point: "The standard-brand religions, whether Jewish, Christian, Mohammedan, or Buddhist, are -- as now practiced -- like exhausted mines very hard to dig." Also, I am again struck by the fact that Watts suggests a mindset which is inclusive, tolerant (and when appropriate, forgiving...especially of self), and at all times determined to continue a process of self-discovery. It seems that he wrote this book because he had become concerned about man's alienation from himself (herself) as well as from other human beings and from the physical world within which all of us struggle to achieve (in Abraham Maslow's terms) survival, then security, and eventually self-fulfillment.

This is not a book for dilettantes. Watts is quite serious when posing questions so easily phrased but so difficult to answer, at least responsibly. In his view, "for thousands of years human history has been a magnificently futile conflict, a wonderfully staged panorama of triumph and tragedies based on the resolute taboo against admitting that black goes with white [i.e. that diametrically opposed forces can co-exist, indeed nourish each other]. Nothing, perhaps, ever got nowhere with so much fascinating ado." Having recently re-read this book, I was reminded of what Whitman observed in Song of Myself: "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes."

I am also reminded of the key concept in Ernest Becker's The Denial of Death. He acknowledges that all of us die eventually. Only the suicide decides the circumstances in which physical death occurs. However, Becker suggests that there is another death that CAN be denied: That which occurs when when we become totally preoccupied with fulfilling others' expectations of us.

For me, that is the essential point in The Book. Watts concludes with a quotation of James Broughton's observations:

This is It
and I am It
and You are It
and so is That
and He is It
And She is It
and It is It
and That is That.

"To come on like IT -- to play at being God -- is to play the Self as a role, which is just what it isn't. When IT plays, it plays at being everything else."

"Who am I?" Alan Watts offers this book which can help to answer that question. However, the inevitably perilous journey of self-discovery can only be completed by each of us. And that journey may require many years of frustration and confusion...without any guarantee that any of us will reach the destination we seek. Our choice. It always was, is...and will be.

Still useful 60's classic

I never gave Watts his full due of respect back in the 60's and 70's, because at the time I (and others) saw him as a trendy popularizer perhaps cashing in on the interest of that segment of the western readership who are perennially eastern-obsessed and therefore too naive and uncritical of their philosophy. Back then, there were just too many young people, who, having rejected whatever western culture they were brought up in, simply accepted, lock, stock, and barrel, Tao, Vedanta, and/or Buddhism after having read one or two books and therefore having finally discovered "the truth."
Well, looking back, that's perhaps too harsh an assessment, and I will say that Watts's book is an extremely well-written, concise, and clear introduction to Vedantic thought that is as relevant today as it was 35 years ago. I recently picked up the book after 30 years, and found that in many ways I enjoyed it even more than I did back then.
As others have commented more completely on the usefulness and relevance of the philosophy in the book, I will just mention one thing. I really enjoyed his discussion about the fear of death. Watts points out that the way western culture deals practically and philosophically with death, isolating the individual from feeling a part of the universe as a whole on the one hand, and as basically a taboo subject, on the other, is unproductive and ultimately does nothing to resolve the issue. He points out that the denial process of sweeping it under the rug only makes it worse, and that ultimately the only solution is to just face one's fear. If death frightens you or makes you afraid, well then, be afraid. At least be honest about it, because that's the first step to realistically starting to deal with the problem.
The reality is, that no matter how certain one is of one's religion, no-one truly knows if there is an afterlife. It is possible that all these beliefs simply represent a wishful-thinking and wish-fulfillment response to a realistic fear--the fear of death. Until one admits that and confronts the issue head on, it will continue to haunt you despite your most cherished beliefs to the contrary.

Full disclosure: I first read this book while traveling ...

Full disclosure: I first read this book while traveling through the mountains of Ecuador, tripping regularly on mescaline-filled San Pedro cactus, so my consensus of the book might be a bit biased. However, I have since read this book (along with his other classic, 'The Wisdom of Insecurity') while not experiencing full ego death and spiritual unity with all of eternity, and I must say, it has still changed the that way Iook at the world. This is a book which one can bestow on a younger person whom seems ready to explore consciousness and the concept of Self using a critical eye, just be sure to tuck a few tabs of the purest Lazarus one can acquire into the sleeve along with it. There is only one thing happening in this universe, and it's all You.

Faced with moving south every year, Sierra's made the best of it. After all, while her family is selling Christmas trees down south in California, she's still in contact with her friends and school in Oregon. No one can really understand what it's like to travel and be with her family working ten hour days, selling Christmas trees and the holiday spirit to people in the same spot of the small town for almost thirty years. Although she's just in high school, the traditions are part of what she enjoys the most, besides visiting with her best friend in Oregon. When a boy comes to the lot and flirts with her, Sierra ignores him. When he comes back a second time and buys another tree, she's curious about him but her friend convinces her the best thing to do would be to forget him completely. He has a history that's dark and he's not worth the time or trouble. Over time, Sierra starts to know the real Caleb but the town still sees the boy with problems, including her parents.

The heart of this book is a story of how love can change you and make you stronger. It's also a story of first love and how braving the unknown takes you places you never imagined. It's about friendship and unspoken codes of honor, about broken friendships and family relationships. Written around Christmastime, it's a book to be enjoyed year round. Read, reread, shared, and so deserving of that special place on your shelf.

Heather wants to double date and is trying to find someone for Sierra, but Sierra takes care of that on her own when she meets and gets to know Caleb. There is a bad rumor going around about Caleb and something he did in the past. My curiosity kept me reading and I enjoyed the whole Christmas theme. The realistic kindness warmed my heart. Caleb introduces Sierra to his mom and sister in an awkward moment. The relationship between Caleb and Sierra struggles because of gossip, parents and the long distance between their homes and they have to learn how to handle all of these problems if they want to make their relationship work. A touching romance that's perfect for the holiday season or anytime you want to feel warm and cozy - 4.5 stars!

Don't Waste Your Time!!!!

Not Worth The time or Money. Very little character development in story and no real draw to keep you interested in finishing the story. I was expecting a lot more from this author, it was very hard to finish it. Nothing in the story that kept hooked to keep reading. I think part of the reason for not liking the story was I couldn't connect with the main character and the author did very little to develop the main character.

A Useful Addition to the Reloader's Library

Mr. Sweeney is a prolific writer who specializes in handguns and reloading. This book is a synopsis of his many articles pertaining to the special considerations pertaining to reloading for handguns. While it is not exactly a "step-by-step" guide that will hold a new reloader by the hand, it does cover the fundamentals of producing safe, reliable ammunition. The first part of this book covers the process in a depth that the handgun reloader will find useful. It provides greater depth than other more generalized books aimed at the beginner which also cover rifle and shotgun reloading. By limiting the scope to handguns, both beginners and more advanced reloaders will benefit from his experience and advice.

The second part examines the most common handgun cartridges reloaded today. While the steps to reload them might be similar, each one has special characteristics that must be considered by the conscientious reloader. For example, the vagaries of the 357 Sig are very different from the characteristics of the 45 ACP.

If I were to offer one criticism, it is that while he is generous with his coverage of cartridges and different bullets, he is somewhat skimpy in his treatment of gunpowder. Specifically, while he goes into detail matching the most suitable bullet for a given task in a specific caliber, he doesn't provide the same insights into powder selection. This would have been of substantial interest to me and the cursory treatment of the subject left me wanting.

All told, Mr. Sweeney's experience and conversational style make this an enjoyable and informative reference. I would recommend it highly.

For Beginners

This book is for beginners...real beginners. I am not an expert in reloading by any means. As a matter of fact, I have been reloading for only one year, yet even to me this book is pretty elementary. The book provides an introduction to reloading breaking down by components, case, primers,...etc. It is a good book for somebody looking into reloading and want to get an idea (even in this I would not consider this book to be the best resource either), not someone who has some idea (20% or more) about reloading. The second half of the book discusses different pistol calibers such as the 9MM, 10MM, 40 S&W,...etc (dedicating a chapter to every caliber, so if this caliber does not interest you, you've basically lost that chapter in the book. If there are-as in my case- more than one caliber that are irrelevant to you, a big portion of the book is then absolutely irrelevant to you in that part). It also has loading data for the. The data is very limited compared to what you can get from a reloading manual. For instance, for a particular caliber and bullet weight (does not even mention bullet type), it lists one powder charge, while reloading manuals always list min and max loads, which provides the reloader with more options as they can start with the min load and work their way up until they get to a load that their pistol would shoot most accurately. In this manual you are given one charge only and I guess you have to live with it, or buy a reloading manual. In all cases, this book would not serve (IMO)as a reloading manual.

The book is nice to read, but you get the type of information you get from reading a magazine (as opposed to a technical book, which this one should be IMO).

This is a good supplement for anyone looking to follow-up to The ABC's of Reloading; there is a good balance of novice and advanced terms and techniques; I didn't have to re-read sections in order to gain understanding. I honestly feel that some of the background info is what has helped my develop accurate, and consistent loads.
