Retail Operations
By John Stanley
Angie Tang and Sarah Lim Prentice Hall ISBN-13: 978 981 06 793F 5

It is rare to see a retail book come out of Singapore, which is why this book caught my eye.
The authors are the Head of Retail Management (Angie) and Senior Lecturer and the School of Business, Singapore Polytechnic.

This book has been written with the student in mind. It is easy to understand and read and is the type of book you can dip in and out of. The 17 chapters cover all aspects of retailing from a student perspective. It covers the basic skill requirements exceptionally well, it doesn't matter if you're a student in Singapore, Birmingham, New York or Sydney.

The book as some great cartoon graphics to get the message across. I particularly like the " How to Deliver Good Customer Service" cartoons. If you consider yourself a long term experienced retailer this is a memory jogger book. If you are new to the industry it is a real gem.

Messages wake you up as to what your possibilities might be.
By A Customer
This manual presents to the reader, how they can improve their life. This isn't the standard "how to" manual; it deals with becoming aware of how you perceive in your everyday life. It indicates that those perceptions are founded on many of your past experiences (upbringing, and personal history etc.). The manual indicates that you cannot change whats happened, but it does indicate that your daily perceptions don't have to be based on that history ("content"). After reading this manual, the reader has a foundation to change how they perceive themself and thereby, their possibilities. Individuals who have read this manual or who have attended Lifespring training, are identified and have expressed what has changed in their lives. I have read this manual several times and have also taken Lifesprings training. My life has changed dramatically. I of course occasionally drift back to how I used to perceive everything, but more-so-than-not, I apply the this manuals messages daily. I cannot over rate this manual.

Ten years later....
By Tracy A. Batwinas
I bought this book 10 years ago, and as much as I love books, I can't think of any other book that I have on my book shelf that has lasted as long as this one!

I purchased the book soon after I did the Lifespring trainings, and the book has been a great way for me to always learn something new, as well as a reminder for me of lessons learned but forgotten.

Not very many people realize it, but the Lifespring trainings are still going on today.

For more information about them, visit [...]

The book also offers small vignettes where someone who has done at least one of the workshops will share about how they've used these principles in their lives.

Overall, I thought it was all pretty neat!

As a former "student" of Lifespring process I felt that the book gives a lot of information that intelectually supports what goes on in the workshop. I recommend you do the workshop before you read the book.
I am very happy with the results for the workshop in my life and the contents of the book only come to show that it is a good option for life.

With Red Bird's Song, Beth Trissel has painted an unforgettable portrait of a daring and defiant love brought to life in the wild and vivid era of Colonial America. Highly recommended for lovers of American history and romance lovers alike!~Virginia Campbell

"I liked this book so much. The author has done a magnificent job of creating both characters and setting. The descriptions of the area are wonderful and put the reader right in there with the characters...I will most certainly read other books by this author." Overall rating 5out of 5 hearts
Reviewer: Jaye Leyel for The Romance Studio

From the Author
Much of the history and events inRed Bird's Song and Native American historical romance novelThrough the Firewere inspired by accounts I uncovered while researching my English/Scots-Irish ancestors. My fascination with Colonial America, particularly stirring tales of the frontier and the Shawnee Indians, is an early and abiding one. My forebears had interactions with this tribe, including family members taken captive. I have ties to Wicomechee, an outstanding Shawnee warrior who really lived and whose story greatly impactedRed Bird's Song. I've included more on Wicomechee at the end of the novel as a bonus for my readers.
Red Bird's Songis Book Three in my Native American Warrior Series. The series loosely ties together based more on time and place and strong Native American characters than as a traditional series that follows the storyline. However,Kira, Daughter of the Moonis the actual sequel toThrough the Fire, and there will be other sequels. In addition to Native Americans, hardy Scots-Irish frontiersmen and women, colonial Englishmen and ladies, and even a few Frenchmen also play an important role in this series. So far, it spans the gamut from the dramatic era of the French and Indian War, through Pontiac's War, The American Revolution and shortly thereafter. But that time period may broaden as more stories are added to this line.

From the Inside Flap
"Ms. Trissel has captured the time periodwonderfully. As I read I am transported back to themid-1700's on the American frontier...I felt I wasthere through Ms. Trissel's descriptions andsettings. I look forward to reading more of BethTrissel."~Shelia, Reviewer for Two Lips

A Captivating Read filled with Fascinating Characters
By Winona Cross
Beth Trissel has gleaned fascinating facts from her own Scot-Irish ancestral history to weave words telling a magical story of love, redemption, and hardship in the midst of cultural clashes. "Red Bird's Song" begins in the fall of 1764 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Readers are immediately hooked with the opening scene of a pending Shawnee attack on a small English settlement.

Beautiful, nature-loving, and adventurous Charity Edmonson leaves the confines of her aunt's kitchen to gather herbs. And, to clear her head. An arranged marriage looms in her future. The intended groom is a friend, but not a paramour.

Charity is taken captive by Wicomechee, a Shawnee warrior. She runs from him. He is impressed with her speed but quickly catches her. The sounds of the war party in the settlement tear at Charity's heart. She soon learns that her uncle is among the dead. Her aunt is missing. And, her very pregnant widowed cousin is reunited with a former English love. The raid was designed to reunite Emma with Colin Dickson, now a blood brother of Wicomechee and a Shawnee on the run from a murder charge. Colin's new name is Waupee.

Charity soon finds herself falling in love with, fearful of, and not completely trusting her captor whom she calls Mechee. Wicomechee dubs Charity Red Bird because of her red hair. Red Bird's impulsive nature tends to lead the war party into exceptional danger.

Beth Trissel subtly uses her vast knowledge of herbs and plants to comfort and heal in several scenes. She weaves some good and bad traits of both the English and Shawnee culture in a realistic manner. This was my first book from Beth Trissel. It will not, by any means, be my last. She's a genius with historical romance. Beth Trissel has earned the five stars.

Very ho-hum
By Spiderlily
I'm the kind of girl that loves romance novels but I need the premise to be realistic enough to buy into it. I went into this with high hopes due to the high reviews. However from the very beginning the descriptions were shallow, the conversation was stilted and very odd, and the situations contrived and not very believable. Reads a bit like amateur fan fiction. I gave it three starts but haven't been able to get past chapter 2 because I just don't find the characters believable.

However I'm sure that there are people that like this kind of thing, so if you don't mind cliche and contrivance and just want romance it might be your thing.

I leave you with a quote from Chapter 2 just to give you a taste of what you'll be getting:
"The fire in Charity's jewel-like eyes and the tremor at her pretty mouth told Wicomechee she sought a target to strike. He could stare endlessly at this English beauty, but had the distinct impression he was about to be attacked.
She loosed the first volley. "How can your people be so heartless?" He bristled. Here was this glorious girl in all her ignorance daring to berate him. "You speak to me of caring, daughter of the Long Knives? Your people cause us much suffering, also to Shawnee women and children"

And this is Chapter 2. I assume the rest of it follows the same suit. I won't be reading it but I'll let the words speak for themselves and someone out there might like it for what it is.

Beth Trissel puts you there!
By Vonnie Davis
If you have an appreciation of history, or are a person who enjoys learning about other cultures or a lover of romance, do yourself a huge favor and buy this book. The author has me right there: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling and feeling everything along with the heroine, Charity, as she assimulates into the Native culture, pre-Revolutionary War. Anytime a writer is skilled enough in his or her craft to transport me on a magic-carpet-ride of words, I become an instant fan.

Win or Lose CHAPTER ONE

“Stay on your toes! You gotta be ready for the ball!” Coach Flores shouted encouragingly.

I stood across from my friend Jessi at soccer practice at Kentville Middle School, a soccer ball in my hands. I tossed the ball to her. Jessi stopped it with her upper thigh, bounced it down to her foot, and kicked it back at me. We were doing a volley exercise, passing the ball back and forth using different parts of our body.

“Keep it coming, Devin!” Jessi called out as she danced around on her feet, waiting for the ball.

I threw the ball again, and this time Jessi ducked into it, her braids flapping in the wind as she hit the ball back to me with her head.

“Now, that’s using your head!” my other friend Emma called to us, laughing at her own silly joke.

“Boo!” I heard Grace, the eighth-grade captain of the Kentville Kangaroos (otherwise known as the Kicks), call out. “That’s the oldest soccer joke in the book!”

“Not the oldest,” Emma said with a gleam in her eyes. “Why did Cinderella get kicked off the soccer team?”

Groans broke out over the entire soccer field before all the Kicks replied together:

“Because she ran away from the ball!”

“Now, that,” Emma said, smiling triumphantly, “is the oldest soccer joke around!”

Everyone started cracking up, even Coach, who chuckled as she glanced at her wristwatch. “We might as well call it quits. I haven’t had a chance to check out today’s paper, and I’d like to do that while you are all still here. The article about the Kicks was supposed to run today!”

Everyone began buzzing excitedly as Coach went to her office to get the newspaper.

“Do you think my photo is in it? I hope they got my good side!” said my friend Frida. (She wanted to be an actress someday, so she was always worried about her good side.)

“I have to text my mom and make sure she picks up a paper,” Zoe added.

I grinned at my friends. When I’d first joined the Kicks at the start of the school year, the team hadn’t been doing so well. But now we were headed to the play-offs, and a reporter and a photographer from the Kentville Chronicle had showed up at a practice the week before. The reporter had asked us a bunch of questions, and then the photographer had clicked away as we’d played a scrimmage.

“We’re in luck! Coach Valentine left a bunch of copies on my desk,” said Coach Flores. She gave one to Frida before she moved down the field, handing out newspapers randomly to the other Kicks as she went. Jessi, Emma, and Zoe huddled around Frida, and I joined them.

“It’s in the sports section, section C,” Coach called.

Frida eagerly leafed through the newspaper, dropping pages onto the field until she found the article.

“Ta-da!” she cried, pointing to the team photo of the Kicks plastered across the page. “Maybe a big casting director will see me in this photo and just have to have me in her next project!” She got a faraway look in her eyes.

“Um, hello?” Jessi said impatiently as she picked up the newspaper pages Frida had scattered all over the field. She straightened up and waved the pages in front of Frida’s face. “We want to read the article!”

“Yeah!” Emma cried. “This is so exciting!”

I looked over Frida’s shoulder and saw my teammates’ smiling faces looking back at me from the newspaper. We all wore the blue-and-white Kentville uniforms, which we had worn especially for the photographer that day. I saw myself grinning, wearing—of course—my pink headband.

“Kentville Kangaroos ‘Kick’ Their Way to the Play-Offs...” Frida began to read the article as Emma clapped her hands excitedly.

“It’s been more than twenty years since the Kentville Kangaroos earned their nickname, ‘the Kicks.’ Coach Maria Luisa Flores should know,” Frida continued reading aloud. “She was a member of the middle school soccer team when the Kangaroos were two-time state champs in 1991 and 1992. It was during this time that the team got their nickname for the arsenal of kicks they used against their opponents. The name ‘the Kicks’ might have stuck, but the team’s winning streak didn’t. The Kicks haven’t seen a play-off season since 1996. Even when Flores came back to her hometown to coach for Kentville a couple of years ago, the team continued to struggle, finishing 10–1 last season. ‘I was focused on fun and making it a positive experience for the girls,’ Flores said about her early years as the Kangaroos’ girls’ coach. ‘But the girls made it very clear to me that they wanted to have fun while being serious competitors at the same time.’ ”

“Losing all the time was so not fun!” Emma interrupted, and everyone nodded their agreement. Even though it had been only a few months ago, it seemed more like a lifetime ago when our practices had been basically chaotic messes.

I shuddered. “Do you remember how disorganized everything was?”

“What about the Panthers game when I scored in our own goal?” Emma asked. “You can’t get any more disorganized than that!”

Coach’s emphasis on fun and fair above all else hadn’t worked out too well. When she’d combined it with solid coaching skills, the Kicks had finally started improving.

Frida continued reading: “Flores’s new coaching attitude, and some fresh blood, turned the team around. A talented group of seventh graders, including Connecticut transplant Devin Burke, the seventh-grade co-captain, are widely regarded as having jump-started the team this season.”

“Devin Burke! I know her!” Jessi yelled, jumping up and down. “Will you sign an autograph for me?”

I blushed. “Cut it out,” I said, swatting her hands away as she tried to hug me, acting like a crazed fan. I felt totally weird that the newspaper was singling me out. We were a team! Before I could say anything else, Frida kept on reading:

“ ‘I don’t know where my team would be without me,’ Burke said at practice. The team is gearing up for their first play-off match against the Newton Tigers this Saturday.”

Frida’s voice trailed off as the quote sank in. She stopped reading and looked at me, her mouth open. Jessi, Emma, and Zoe all stared at me too, with surprised—and hurt—looks in their eyes.

“Wow, Devin,” Jessi said slowly. The joking smile from a moment ago left her face.

I don’t know where my team would be without me. The sentence echoed in my head, over and over. It sounded so stuck-up.

“I never said that!” I cried, feeling like I was on trial, with their angry eyes staring at me. I thought back to the day when the reporter, Cassidy Vale, had visited our team. She had seemed really interested in talking to me, especially after finding out I was not only new to the team but new to Kentville Middle School.

“And you were made co-captain?” she had asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes,” I’d said, nodding, but I hadn’t told her that part of the reason was that nobody else in the seventh grade had wanted to be a co-captain at the time. The team’s disorganization, plus the fact that mean Mirabelle had been the eighth-grade captain, had made the job less than desirable.

But I knew I’d made sure to tell her how much being on the Kicks meant to me. She must have gotten my words mixed up.

“I swear! I told the reporter, ‘I don’t know where I would be without my team’ not ‘I don’t know where my team would be without me.’ You’ve got to believe me!” I felt like I had swallowed a rock and that it was slowly turning around and around in my stomach.

Emma gave me a sympathetic smile. “What was in the newspaper, it really doesn’t sound like something you would say, Devin.”

“Never!” I said. “I remember telling the reporter that ‘I don’t know where I would be without my team,’ because I really don’t! I was so scared on the first day of school. Meeting you guys and joining the Kicks was the best thing that could have happened. If I hadn’t, I’d probably still be hiding out in the bathroom during lunch!” I gave a little hiccup as I choked back tears.

“Hey, Devin, relax,” Jessi said slowly as she put her arm around me. “It just took us by surprise, that’s all. And the reason it was so shocking is because we would never expect you to say something like that, never!”

“They misquoted you!” Frida said. “It happens to actors all the time. It’s part of being in the public eye.”

“All I want to do is play soccer, not be in the public eye and get all misquoted and stuff!” I felt miserable.

Zoe gave me a hug. “I believe you, Devin. Don’t worry about it. Anyone who knows you would know you’d never say anything like that.”

I was taller than Zoe, so as I hugged her back, I looked over her short strawberry-blond hair at Jessi, Emma, and Frida. They were all smiling at me.

“Group hug!” Jessi called. Zoe and I each opened an arm, and everyone came pouring in.

“Thanks, guys,” I said, hugging them tight. “I don’t know where I would be without my friends, and you can quote me on that!”

After we all untangled from our group hug, Jessi smiled up at me. “Let’s focus on the positive, which is that the Kicks have made it to play-offs!”

“Yes!” I pumped a fist in the air. “And we all worked together as a team to make that happen.”

Zoe looked up. “My dad’s here. Time to go!”

I followed her gaze to the parking lot next to the field. It was filling up with cars, as practice was supposed to be done by now. I spotted my family’s white minivan. Maisie, my little sister, called it the Marshmallow.

We walked over to the benches to grab our stuff, and as we did, I noticed the other Kicks still huddled around newspapers in groups. For a second I’d forgotten that the entire team was reading the article. What were they thinking about me?

We walked by Grace, the eighth-grade co-captain. She was talking with Anjali, Maya, and Giselle, all eighth graders. They looked up at us as we passed, giving me a dirty look. I stopped in my tracks.

“Look, guys, about the article,” I began.

“Yeah, about the article,” Anjali said. “Thanks for being on our team, Devin. I don’t know what we’d do without you.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm. Maya and Giselle giggled, but Grace just looked at me intently.

“That was a pretty rude thing to say,” she said quietly.

“I didn’t say it! I swear!” I felt like I was back at square one. I explained what I had really said and how I’d been misquoted.

“Okay, Devin,” Grace said. But I could tell she didn’t believe me.

“Are we cool?” I asked.

She nodded curtly but didn’t say anything. Uh-oh. I didn’t think we were cool at all. More like ice cold, actually.

As I went to catch up with my friends, I saw Alandra, Taylor, and Zarine join Grace and her friends. They were all eighth graders too. Anjali started whispering loudly, nodding in my direction from time to time. I heard the other girls whispering back to her as they shot looks at me.

I felt my shoulders slump as I walked to the parking lot. My best friends believed me, but it was pretty obvious my other teammates didn’t.

The Kicks by Alex Morgan
By Barb
I gave this book to my nine year old granddaughter, also a soccer player, and explained the author was Alex Morgan, gold medal winner from USA women's soccer team. She immediately said she would read it for her book report. Skimming through the book I saw a good story line and will probably read it when she is finished

Superstar player and superstar children's author
By Don
With Alex Morgan joining Orlando Pride and coming to our city beautiful, I thought it would be a good idea to get a few of her books for my middle school age daughter to try out. I haven't read them myself but they are her new favorite books. No longer is it a struggle to get her to read before bed; it's actually more difficult to get her to put it down and go to bed. The books aren't very long so it only takes her a couple days to knock them out and beg for me to order the next one. I plan on continuing to purchase these as long as they keep releasing new ones and will be holding onto them to pass on to her younger soccer playing sister when she learns to read.

Perfect for tween to early teen soccer fans!
By TM of 4
My 13 year old daughter has all three books in this series. It can be difficult to find appropriate books for young teen girls, especially for sporty girls. We were excited to try the series, especially considering Alex Morgan is a favorite US women's soccer player! She really enjoyed reading these books. While this was not her favorite book in the series, she would recommend it to other girls. It would be helpful to read the books in order.

From the Author
A Note From The AuthorWhen I was a kid, I loved learning about animals, especially the weird ones!I remember reading about pangolins and how they were in trouble andneeded protection from poachers. I thought they would probably be extinctbefore I ever got to see one. I didn't feel like there was much I could do tohelp an animal in trouble so far away. That made me feel very sad. Many years later, as an adult, I traveled very far from home to the countryof Cambodia. While I was there, I visited an animal sanctuary and guesswhat I saw? A pangolin! He had been rescued from poachers and wasrecovering, surrounded by people who work to protect endangered animals.Learning about endangered animals can be discouraging. But the importantthing is to be inspired to help and not to lose hope that these unique andamazing creatures will continue to walk the earth with us.Cheers,Anastasia KierstAuthor and Illustrator of P is for Pangolin

Grea kids book
By cass
This is a great book. Very colorful and fun. Even if the kiddos can't read they can express themselves through the pictures. I love the added teacher pages at the back. Great way to introduce new and endangered animals and get a grade or too from it! Highly recommended!

Perfect ABC for my little cousins!
By LTrempe
I picked up a copy of P is for Pangolin as a Christmas gift for my young cousins (3-4 years). The illustrations are just beautiful and the text is excellent as well. P is for Pangolin is a different take on the classic animal alphabet book. I love that it highlights typically under appreciated and/or endangered animals. One of my favorites in this author's series!

Children's Minds, by Margaret Donaldson

How and when does a child begin to make sense of the world? Why does a lively preschool child so often become a semiliterate and defeated school failure?

Developmental psychologist Margaret Donaldson shows that much of the intellectual framework on which we base our teaching is misleading. We both underestimate the astonishing rational powers of young children and ignore the major stumbling block that children face when starting school.

Given a setting and a language that makes sense to them in human terms, very young children can perform tasks often thought to be beyond them. The preschool child learns everything in a human situation. Only in school is he asked to acquire skills―reading, writing, arithmetic―isolated from a real-life context. This transition is difficult.

The author suggests a range of strategies that parents and schools can adopt to help children. She argues that reading is even more important than we have thought it to be, since learning to read ca actually speed children through the crucial transition.

This book is an essential source of guidance for parents and all who contribute to a child's education.

'One of the most powerful, most wisely balanced and best informed books on the development of the child's mind...Its implications for education are enormous.' Jerome Bruner 'A book of great, and very general significance...a classic.' Jack Tizard

About the Author

At an early stage in her career she spent some time at Piaget's research institute in Geneva and was much influenced by the experience, although she later came to question some important aspects of Piagetian theory. A Groundbreaking Book For Early Childhood Literacy Experts
By Reginald Williams
Donaldson's book will stand for many years as the sterling example of a clear argument promoting learning language through a combined Chomsky/Piagetian perspective. Even though she does not present a thoroughly multi-cultural vision of her thrust, she nonetheless educates the reader not only about the history of relevant literacy research but also about how to apply these theories in a classroom.

Challenges to the theories of Piaget and Chomsky
By Silke Rehman
This is a very easily read book putting forward key arguments against the theories of Piaget and Chomsky and proposing action steps to make more children succeed in todays' school environment (she sees rankings at school and the resulting feeling of being a failure as the key demotivating factor leading to children stopping development). Her main criticism of Piaget is that he is drawing his conclusion from experiments that are ill-fitted for children. First, she challenges the postulate of "egocentrism" in the ages below 7. She proves by sharing experiments of her own and her research fellows that children who failed in Piaget's "mountain experiment" (the task to describe 3 differently coloured mountains from a doll's rather than one's own perspective), suceeded in her "policemen experiment", where the child is asked to hide from a policeman requiring it to take the view of the policeman to find the right hiding position. Her argument is that children are very well capable of seeing the POV of other people as long as this is relevant to them. While children below the age of 7 know very well the situation of having to hide in order to avoid punishment, they cannot identify with a doll's view of 3 mountains. The same way she proves that the capability to reason deductively ( a skill Piaget denies for children below 7) does exist in children but can only be shown in experiments that reflect the fact that children do have their own interpretation of the experimenters question, intention as well as the meaning of the situation based on their individual history. She continues with experiments proving that making sense of situations comes BEFORE language understanding that Chomsky's assumption of a LAD has no ground. And she finishes with applying her findings in her vision on how more children could be successful in our school system.
