About the Author
Stacey Katz received her Ph.D from the University of Texas, Austin, in French Linguistics. Stacey Katz is currently the Director of Language Programs in Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. She has published several pedagogical texts and presented her research at major conferences. Stacey's research interests include Applied French Linguistics, French syntax and French pragmatics.

Clear and practical

As a French professor I was impressed with the format of this book: it answers questions that students ask on a regular basis and it gives answers using English as the basis; as such it would be perfect for anyone doing translation work. The chapter on relative pronouns is particularly successful, so are the little notes about the difference between spoken and written French seldom explained in other grammars. Finally the spiral binding makes it very practical to use!

This book needed to be written: it fills a gap.

Having taught French in the American system for many years I believe that this book needed to be written because it fills a gap: most language textbooks and grammar books currently on the market are not practical when grammar is concerned. Having as their focus a communicative approach, many books overlook grammar these days. Often teachers don't really know how to answer the questions American students ask about French grammar satisfactorily. This book helps exactly with that: it anticipates students' questions and provides clear and concise explanations. I therefore appreciate this grammar book very much and think it is extremely useful. The book also fills a gap in that it discusses the differences between written and oral French, a concept almost all textbooks overlook. I believe that the book will certainly appeal to teachers of French (of all levels) but not only to them. It will also interest students who want to perfect their French language skills. Highly recommended.

Excellent teaching/learning tool

As an experienced professor, I am very impressed by this book. It is predicated upon those grammatical points that pose the greatest challenges for students, from their first year of study up until graduate school, although its ideal audience would be students who have a basic mastery of French grammar.

The book addresses those points that are not necessarily rule-bound, but depend on pragmatic and/or stylistic factors. Mastery of these issues results in more nuanced and native-like speech.

This book is not a verb compendium nor a review of grammar rules. It fills in the gaps that traditional textbooks leave. With the additional perspectives gained from this book, students will gain an enhanced understanding of what it means to speak natural-sounding French instead of un fran�ais livresque--bookish French.

This book is written in a style that is accessible and engaging. The voice of a sincere, encouraging teacher comes through clearly.

Katz-Bourns's book is an excellent addition to a serious French student's library. Bonne lecture!

About the Author

Walter Wymer is an Associate Professor of Marketing in the School of Business at Christopher Newport University.� Walter earned his D.B.A. from Indiana University in 1996, taught one year at Jacksonville University, and joined the faculty of CNU in 1997.� His area of research expertise is nonprofit marketing.� He has published peer reviewed articles and given presentations on volunteer marketing, cause-related marketing, direct marketing, social marketing, and fund raising.� Walter is a former president of the Atlantic Marketing Association.� He is editor of the Journal of Nonprofit & Public Sector Marketing and North American editor of the International Journal of Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Marketing.

Patricia Knowles is Associate Professor in the Department of Marketing (College of Business and Behavioral Science, Clemson University), where she teaches courses in Nonprofit Marketing, Promotional Strategy, Consumer Behavior and Marketing Principles. Dr. Knowles joined the Marketing Faculty in the fall of 1991. Her academic research is concerned with Issues in Nonprofit Marketing, Marketing Strategy Analysis, e.g., product portfolio matrices, Perceptions of Promotional Tools, and B2B Advertising. Dr. Gomes joined the Marketing Faculty in the fall of 1987. Previously, he had been Technical Manager and later a Division Marketing Manager for first tier suppliers to the automotive, copier, and computer industries. His academic publications span logistics, leadership, and e-commerce as they relate both to business and nonprofit marketing. He has published in the Journal of Nonprofit and Public Sector Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Marketing Education Review, Journal of Marketing Education, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Segmentation in Marketing, Transportation Journal, Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Industrial Marketing Management, and International Journal of Physical Distribution and Materials Management.� In addition, he has numerous national conference proceedings and has made many presentations.� In addition to being on the editorial review boards of leading journals, Dr. Gomes has twice been elected an Officer and National Executive Board member of the Academy of Marketing Science, President of the regional Council of Logistics Management, and Executive Board member of the regional National Association of Purchasing Management. I found it to be an excellent compilation of practical and diverse examples for both new and moderate users. The graphical menu approach with step-by-step examples and full web videos with CD support for working finished models is very supportive of the workbench interface as well as the reviews of the relevant physics involved for robust boundary conditions. I will be looking for more for advanced uses in the future for ANSYS Multi-physics, Explicit STR, Rigid Dynamics, and LS-Dyna extensions. If the author can create more, I will look here first.

Valuable Training Tool for ANSYS Workbench

This is a well written tutorial for ANSYS Workbench. Having used ANSYS for over twenty years, I used this book to bring myself kicking and screaming out of the APDL format. The book includes a CD that is very helpful in the learning process. The author has wisely set up the book to be followed in a program like fashion. Unfortunately, the book is so popular in my firm that I can't seem to keep it on my bookshelf. We have sent folks to ANSYS formal training and have had better results just having them go through this workbook. We now provide each new analyst with this workbook.

suspenseful and engaging

Mike Walton, a federal air marshal and Lisa, a doctor and his wife, give up their former identities and any semblance of a "normal" life to fight terrorists who have destroyed their family and hundreds of other innocent citizens in terrorist attacks. Terrorist plots and action take place in Ottawa, New York, cities in France, Sierra Leone among other places, as the Waltons and their team members attempt unravel the conspiracies, to track down the terrorists and to prevent their devastating attacks.

The Thin Black Line is suspenseful and kept me wondering how it would conclude. (Could there be a happy ending?) I wondered if i could "trust" some of the characters-- if they were who they presented themselves to be. The author's experience in law enforcement and the military provided realistic military, weaponry, covert operations, and foreign scene details that make the story believable and take the reader to scenes of the action. I'm looking forward to "book 2" and ready to find out what happens next.

Brilliant read from exciting new author!

Yes, I lost a fair amount of sleep over The Thin Black Line as I couldn't put it down. With the very first words, I was hooked and locked in for a hair raising ride with this book.

Everything I imagine our scary world to be was emmulated in this story of terrorism and heroism. Characters were well developed and fleshed out. The plot flowed smoothly to a satisfying conclusion. I desperately want to read more about Mike and Lisa Walton's journey into saving our world.

This is a very fast paced, breath holding and hair raising thriller. Words really don't convey the realism and believability of this work of art, rather Simon Gervais. I found it to be intriguing and can't wait for more from this exciting new author!

This is a very fast paced, breath holding and edge of the seat thriller. The story started right in with a terrifying opening that I don’t think I will ever forget. Words really don't convey the realism and believability of this work of Simon Gervais. The author's experience in law enforcement and the military provided realistic military, weaponry, covert operations, and foreign scene details that make the story believable.
In my opinion Mr. Gervais is one of the most exciting new writer. A wonderful new author who may just be a Vince Flynn rival. I'm so looking forward to Book 2 for some unanswered questions and ready to find out what Mike and Lisa and the IMSI are up against next. Well done Simon!!!

It helps to know the author

I actually took the course from the professor who wrote the book so I got taught the same techniques that you're expected to use.

A bit about the man: Dr. Niku is an old-school professor who was involved in the early days of robotics. He is not one to stay up with the times and taught the whole class from an overhead projector. (I know, right?) At times, the material seemed a bit outdated. For example, we were told that in practice, the position calculations are performed by the circuitry and cannot be corrected for the end-effector used, which I find hard to believe because the company I work for recently installed a 5 axis robotic welding center with a custom end torch and we are able to program it with the torch tip as the end. He is a good professor, who I enjoyed but I wonder if my class was a bit more of a history of robotics than a course in practical robotics.

The book is a bit hard to understand at times and sometimes is unclear. Again, it helped me because I could ask the man who wrote it. Don't expect to be able to teach yourself from the book, but I will probably be keeping it for reference.

A nice thing about it is that is relatively small and lightweight, so that's good.

Pass on this book if you aren't an engineering student

I used this text as a Computer Science grad student, and it was worthless. I'm reasonably skilled in linear algebra, but the examples and explanations in this book just seemed like nonsense. I had to spend a ton of time on khan academy, the course site from a UCLA professor, and with a tutor, just to do the problems in this book. Even the masters students in math said they couldn't make sense of this garbage book.
