Feucht review

For any person wanting to learn the fine details of analog solid state design the series of books by Feucht is excellent.
He is an experienced and competent engineer who handles his subject clearly and professionally.
His background as a vertical amplifier designer at Tektronix gives him a solid foundation for this book on amplifier design. Here transistor modelling is covered in detail and several working circuits are given and can be checked with SPICE or by construction.
Young engineers in training will benefit from the foundational approach used. Those who are accustomed mainly to using opamps as building blocks will learn the fundamentals of discrete transistor multistage amplifier design. As a seasoned analog designer myself, I recommend the book highly.

Botched analysis example

There is some merit to this series. Unfortunately it is hard to follow some of the analysis, and it will leave the inexperienced young electronics professional unable to follow....I have a fair bit of experience, and I find certain sections hard to follow.

Another thing is there are examples of bad amplifier analysis or circuits that just won't work.

Two examples:

Botched amplifier noise analysis.

ON page 95, in Volume 3, under his example of opamp input noise he has a completely botched analysis of the output noise. He doesn't give an equation (see what I mean?), but it's not too hard to figure out what he is doing.

His equation (not given, but intuited from data given):
eno=sqrt(eni^2 + 2(enR)^2+ (in*rin||Rfb)^2) = 61.1nV/rtHz All Wrong!

The proper equation:
eno=sqrt( ((1+Rfb/rin)*eni)^2 + (in*Rfb)^2 + 2(enR)^2) = 70.8nV/rtHz

The only reason he ends up somewhat close to the correct answer is because the 100k resistors used in his example comprise the dominant source of noise. Its obvious if you are in an inverting gain of 1 that the amplifier itself is in a noise gain of 2, which means you have to at least get 2x the input referred voltage noise at the output.....(1+Rfb/rin)*eni or 40nV^rtHz. The resistors contribute the sqrt(2)*40.7nV/rtHz...or 57.55nV/rtHz....the current noise is only gained up to the output by the feedback resistor in*rfb = 10nV/rtHz. Rss those together you get the 70.8nV/rtHz.

Another example of a circuit that will not work is the one on page 125, which has positive feedback, and would latch at one supply rail or the other depending on amplifier offset.

About the Author
Prof. Jayamangal Prasad is an authority in the field of Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation. He has over the past three and a half decades made significant life time contributions in the development of NDE technology. Prof. Prasad obtained his Master's degree from the University of Patna and University of Sheffield (UK). He has been actively associated with training, development of techniques and test facilities, documentation, R&D and archiving aspects of NDE technology, as the head of Centre of Excellence in NDT at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. and as the head of NDT projects at aeronautical Development Agency (Light Combat Aircraft Project). He has trained at NDT Centre over thousand NDT engineers/technicians. After retirement from Aeronautical Development Agency, he has served as Specialist Consultant to Government and private organization and academic institutions in areas related to NDE of metallic and composite materials. He is associated with a number of professional associations and is the Founder Chairman of Bangalore Chapter of NDT Society of India. Dr C G Krishnadas Nair is a graduate in metallurgical engineering from IIT Chennai and Ph. D from the University of Sask, Canada. After a brief academic career he joined Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., and served in many responsible positions and retired as Chairman and Managing Director of the company. After retirement from HAL, he served as Vice Chancellor of Mahaveer Academy of Technology & Science (MATS) University. Currently, he is an AICTE-INAE Distinguished visiting professor at IIT Chennai and Principal Advisor to Jain Group of Educational Institutions. This book saved me another 3 month block of life spent laboring over BarBri materials and the emotional trauma of another bar fail. I bought this and the Tim Tyler "How to Write Performance Tests for Bar Exams" at the recommendation of a successful California Bar repeat taker's blog and used both along with an old 2006 BarBri MBE subjects outline and 1 Kaplan book of MBEs. I passed.

Excellent study guide. Covers tactics, strategies, tips, tricks and basic "watch for this" information. The example essays and approach are proving to be very helpful. There are numerous typos and a few substantive errors - but on balance its pretty solid on the content and excellent on the approach.

Answered all my questions

While I have been doing my own taxes for over 40 years as a W2 employee, I recently started my own business as a real estate professional. I am also an investment property owner. This book covered all the details I needed to prepare my 2013 taxes as an independent contractor and plan for proper record keeping for 2014. Book also has coverage for other business types, LLC, Subchapter-S, Corporations (I glossed over those sections). I highly reccommend this book and I will purchase the 2014 version next year.

Simple summary - most content is available for free

While the book was a decent summary, I thought this book was very basic and didn't add anything to what is freely available on web sites (what I read online just today). And with this in mind, the book was definitely not worth the higher cost for it. Also I was disappointed that the business deductions were not more clear - specifically I was looking for the exact categories to match deductions to in Schedule C (with line numbers) and that was not specifically mentioned.

Informative book for beginners

I bought this book for a beginners class I had to take for college, and I have to say that this book is pretty awesome. It separates microsoft word, power point, excel, and access information, so its a smooth transition when your reading and learning. They also have questions and projects in the back to give you some practice. I don't know if all do - but mines did - come with a cd. The cd is the extra boost. It not only has the same notes as the book, it also makes it more interactive with u by having objects you can click and the tests at the end of the chapter. I would definitely recommend to a beginner or someone who needs to brush up on their microsoft abilities.

I have learned so much from the contents this book has, completed one semester course, and have gotten a certificate as well! I like how the book came in excellent condition. And that the shipping was fast. Thank you very much for this!!

Great textbook

This made the class so much easier. The tracking file systems is very reliable. I suggest reading through chapters and doing the chapter exams before doing the projects in the back.
