Excellent text on statistical biomedical signal analysis

I am using this book as a primary textbook in a Biomedical Engineering undergraduate course on Biomedical signal analysis. The students in this class come with a fairly good background in linear systems, stochastic processes and physiology, and the purpose of the course is to integrate this knowledge, and actually apply it to real-world statistical biomedical signals. Previous iterations of the course relied on a general statistical signals book (Bendat & Piersol), together with physiological examples provided by the instructor, since physiological signals books were too shallow. The current book, however, elegantly integrates the statistical signal analysis topics with the relevant biomedical applications, and it became an obvious choice. Moreover, unlike general engineering textbooks, this book doesn't shy away from methods for treating nonstationary signals (segmentation, time-frequency analysis, wavelets, detection...), as these are so fundamental in characterizing biomedical signals. Such topics are typically treated in a multitude of specialized books, and are therefore difficult to integrate coherently into a short course.

To improve: since the book's focus is on EEG and ECG, it could be great if the authors added a chapter on source localization/inverse problems, which arise in both systems. Although this is a huge topic in its own, one could do some basic justice to this important topic in a limited space as well, and thereby introduce students to ill-posed problems and their regularization. I was also slightly dissapointed that there is very little on error bounds in compound estimates (correlation and spectral density functions).

About the Author
Friedrich Engels was born in 1820, in the German city of Barmen. He died in London in 1895 while editing the fourth volume of Capital.

Karl Marx studied law and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Berlin, completing his doctorate in 1841. Expelled from Prussia in 1844, he took up residence first in Paris and then in London where, in 1867, he published his magnum opus Capital. A co-founder of the International Workingmen’s Association in 1864, Marx died in London in 1883.

Robert C. Tucker is professor of politics emeritus at Princeton University and past president of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies.

A Representative Reader

Marx and Engels wrote so much that getting a handle on their ideas can be difficult. Of course, "The Communist Manifesto" is unbeatable as an introductory text. Indeed, it was their classic work. Not to worry, it's in the reader. So start with that, and if you feel the need to delve deeper into the philosophical underpinnings of Marxism (as Marx and Engels actually formulated it), you will have everything you need in this one book. Compact, representative, and with a good translation - it is the perfect book for those of us who would chose to understand these thinkers, without spending a lifetime in the library.

Good compilation

Marx and Engels wrote an absolutely tremendous amount of the most diverse topics of society possible. This reader does a good job of putting together some representative readings, starting from their most famous "The Communist Manifesto", going into his analysis of revolutions and conditions in many different countries, including France, India, Russia, etc., finally reaching into topics such as family and morality (mainly addressed by Engels).
Though not a Marxist myself, I found this compilation a very comprehensive view of their thinking. It should be sufficient to anyone not seeking to write a dissertation on their thinking.

Exquisite collection of Marx's writings.

If you're a person that is presently trying to decide where you should start out in your study of Marxism, this book is probably where you "should" start. The Marx-Engels reader has every conceivable work that should be read by any prospective Communist, or anti-Communist. It's all here, the Communist Manifesto, Capital Volume 1, the 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, the origin of family, private property and the state, and so on, and so on.
The format of the book has the writings of Marx-Engels in such a way, that a person can see the development of their ideas with, at the very least, some degree of efficiency. From the greed of the borgeoisie and the petty-borgeoisie, to the struggle of proletariat and the lumpen-proletariat. For a proletarian such as myself, this is the next best thing to purchasing Marx's collected works(it took me forever just to afford the extraordinary cost of Lenin's collected works). Currently, the ebb in revolutionary Marxism seems to indicate Marx was completely false in his description of Capitalism as a decadent system, but the fact is, Marxism is still a political force(whether "Cold Warriors" want to admit it or not), with prominent intellectuals such as Stephen Jay Gould and Cornel West being a few indivuals who are proponents of the ideaology. For a person who takes the time to look at the statistics, the middle class is completely vanishing, the disproportionate amount of wealth in the hands of the borgeoisie seems analogous to Lenin's description of 1890's Russia(I am referring to his masterful work, "New Economic Developments in Peasant Life, Volume 1, Collected Works", but in an advanced capitalist society such as the US, replace the word "peasant" with "proletarian"), the majority of the population are exponentially less prosperous than the minority of the population.
To conclude, any educated person, whether they be right-wingers, left-wingers, or extremists, should read this book. With the surprising success of Gennady Zyuganov in Russia, the very large socialist movement in the US, and of course, with the most populous country on Earth being a Communist nation, a rudimentary understanding of Marxism should be "necessary". In addition to the "Marx-Engels" reader, a person should read some of Lenin's more notable works, such as "What is to be Done?", "Who the Friends of the People are, and how they fight the social democrats", and "State and Revolution".

One of Sprague de Camp's Best

This book is more like science fantasy than science fiction, involving only the past, not the future. Archaeologist Martin Padway suddenly finds himself transported from modern Rome to the first half of the sixth century AD. He muddles through by guessing at what would be midway between classical Latin and modern Italian, making friends with a Goth named Nevitta and a religious banker named Thomasus (the multiplicity of competing religious views and arguments is a running joke). Martin would like to stave off the dark ages that he knows are coming, so he starts reinventing things that he thinks will be useful, using Roman materials. Fortunately the book contains only one story (rather than two novellas as in some other works), so Sprague de Camp can develop the plot more fully and create more in-depth characters. The details of Martin’s attempts at duplicating inventions and dealing with the complex world of late Rome are engrossing and often very funny. Highly recommended if you like humorous/light fantasy.

This ebook quickly covers many different areas of your life where you can declutter and simplify. It is organized into different rooms of your home and different areas of your life. This talks about common trouble spots like the bedroom and bathroom. It also gets into organizing your digital life and friends. There are even tips on relationships and eating habits. The advice the ebook gives is pretty general. It is more of a guide to get you started with organizational skills. It lists a bunch of different areas of life where change can happen to make life simpler and less stressful. There are not many detailed or specific "things to do" in this ebook. This is more of a place to start to see the places in your life where you may need change.

There are a few helpful tips and things I have been overlooking for years. But most of the advice is logical stuff or things that I already do. This is geared more to people who are really overwhelmed and need a guide of where to start. It is a quick easy read so you might pick up some tricks.

I find the book to be informative as the author covers lots of spaces and objects for decluttering, but they are obvious, though it’s good to see the list and follow. I wish I could get more specific and interesting tips to feel really motivated to do it step-by –step without even a day gap.

About the Author

Adam Nathan is a principal software architect for Microsoft in the Startup Business Group. Adam was previously the founding developer and architect for Popfly, Microsoft's first product built on Silverlight, named one of the 25 most innovative products of 2007 by PCWorld Magazine. Having started his career on Microsoft’s Common Language Runtime team, Adam has been at the core of .NET and WPF technologies since the very beginning.

Great for those who may be reluctant to move off of WinForms

I was a little worried that this text would fly right over my head but was pleasantly surprised. It is easy to read and understand, has just the right amount of history and back story for each chapter and the material is presented in a useful and logical order.

If you have at least a moderate knowledge of WinForms and Visual studio the lessons will be easy to understand and do a excellent job of highlighting the differences, advantages and limitations of WPF. Also, there is plenty of depth for experts who are looking for a decent reference.

I purchased the Kindle version thinking if I liked the book I'd get a hard copy. The Kindle version, when viewed using the cloud reader, is near perfectly formatted and is in full color, a nice improvement over previous Kindle programming books I've experienced.

The best WPF book there is and one of the best technical books I've read to date

This book is a prime example of how a WPF book should be written. The author not only presents many topics in an encyclopedic fashion, but also gives details for the "whys." Also, the diagrams in the book are phenomenal in helping to illustrate the examples and descriptions presented in the text. The book has both a lot of breadth and a lot of depth as well. One can choose to read this book "superficially," ignoring the details. However, for those of us who are interested in the whys as well as the hows, this book presents much more depth than I would expect from a WPF (or any software development) book.

As for the rating, I give the content 6 out of 5 stars. On the other hand, I give the publisher (Sams) 2 out of 5 stars. The reason for this is that the pages are ridiculously thin, so you get bleed-through between the two sides of a page, especially in the many densely colored regions that are present in the illustrations in this book. Also, the CMY color plates that are used to add color to the book were often off, resulting in imprecise positioning of colors which is especially noticeable on thin lines and colored text. On top of all of this, two physical pages in my particular book had slight creases in the paper, which resulted in significant misprints on those pages. Fortunately, the resultant printed pages were still legible, so I did not bother to return the book to Amazon or the publisher for a replacement.

In all, because of the quality of the actual content, I do not want to subtract a star or two from the book's rating. However, I think that Sams _really_ needs to do a much better job of printing color books such as this one. Skimping on paper thickness and not aligning the color plates properly is reminiscent of printing errors from the early 80s, not late 2013.

Written to make you MORE of an expert

Probably the most important thing you and I look for in these reviews is "Who is this book written for?". The answer here is someone who already knows a good deal of C# programming that wants to become an expert at WPF. If you want a start-from-zero book on how to create user interfaces this is not it. But if you know C# and you want to learn WPF in the context of how it interacts with C code as well as with hardware, this is the book for you. The more you know about programming in general, the more this book will help you.

It's hard to quantify what is meant by "expert" and "the more you know . . . " but if you don't know what inheritance is or what "instanciate" means, you might not get as much out of it. If you know C# and you want to get about as deep into WPF as you can go, this book will take you there. The first three chapters set the stage by giving extensive details on the background, philosophy and operation of WPF. There is even some history thrown in, and the author is in a position to know it! I read those three but started on Chapt 4 where the WPF building really begins.

I can give you some advice as to the path to follow if you're not already a C# expert. I certainly wasn't when I was searching for a book like this but I was a competent programmer. I started with John Sharp's excellent book "Visual C# 2010", beginning on p. 443 he takes you through your first WPF interface in great detail for about 100 pages. After I finished his tutorial, I had no trouble going to "WPF 4.5 Unleashed" and starting on Chapt 4 where Mr. Nathan begins getting into WPF deeply. Between the two I learned a lot of both interface and programming skills. I would not have been able to just jump into "Unleashed" because I didn't quite have the programming skills. You might be in better or worse shape to start.

From what I now know about WPF, there isn't much that it can do that this book doesn't at least touch on. It was a great teaching tool for me and serves now as a reference book when I need to try something advanced.

The writing is succinct and clear. The color graphics and type are VERY helpful and greatly aids following along on your computer, particularly if you Visual Studio.

It's a very good book and I'm glad I bought it.

About the Author
Born in 1948, Barry grew up in Memphis, Tennessee until age nine then his family moved to Tampa, Florida. He attended school in Tampa from grade school to college. He has served in the U.S. Navy, Tampa Police Department, Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission, United Methodist Church, and the US Army. He is now retired in Land O Lakes, Florida enjoying his two grandsons and volunteering in his local church, the Community Volunteer Corps, the Veteran's National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida presiding over funerals and as a chaplain on Holland America Line.
