Second Edition is Even Better!

A great update to the first edition, which was a classic. This belongs in the reference library of every web and user experience designer. Although Dan Brown clearly wrote this with web designers from the IA/UX persuasion in mind, there's guidance throughout that can be leveraged by those from other design and creative disciplines that need to communicate their work to various audiences.

For me, that's the secret sauce that makes this book so valuable. Besides the excellent information (and more illustrations) on structure and tools for creating effective communications, it provides guidance on when and how to frame and use different types of communications (deliverables or diagrams) to facilitate discussions, work with stakeholders, clients, and other contributors, and enable projects to move forward. If you work with clients or stakeholders (what designer doesn't?), this book will help you be more successful.

Good content lost in poor style

As some other reviewers have pointed out this book is best suited to those who are interested in managing the project as well as actually doing the design job. I can see how from his perspective this book does not agree with some designers, who care very little about how to set-up meetings to discuss design deliverables, and just want get their primary job done. However, as a product manager, I found this part interesting.
What is really bothering me is the style of the author's writing. Overcomplicated long phrasings mixed with out-of-place comments (or are those jokes?) about author's hobbies... sometimes I feel I am reading a blog not a book, it's a waste of time.
I would suggest that for the 3rd edition the author teams up with a good editor who would help him phrase his thoughts more laconically, and remove all the noise from the book. Until then, if you are considering buying this book, I suggest you keep looking (unless you have lots of free time).

Beautiful in all ways!

OK, I'm biased, but I love this book. Dan did such a great job creating a book that you actually WANT to come back to time and again. If you're like me, you probably have lots of books on your shelf, and they look nice up there, but you may not take them down and actually use them very much. This book might not look as nice on your shelf, because you'll use it so much that it will get beat up. Which is a good thing.

O'Reilly sells this book both in paper and electronic formats. The electronic formats include PDF, ePub and Mobi. The website provides suggestions as to which version to use on various devices. I did the review using the PDF version of the book.

On October 26th, 2012 Windows 8 became generally available and the first computers using this new operating system are now delivered. For anyone contemplating upgrading to Windows 8 on an old computer or getting Windows 8 on a new computer, this is an excellent book. Extremely well organized the authors take the logical steps a new user should take to understand and get proficient in using this new Operating System. I would have given it five stars, save for the fact that the PDF electronic version of the book does not have "live links" for navigating to references, such as "See chapter `xyz' for more information" isn't a link to the chapter.

The book takes the reader through explanations of what Windows 8 is, what the differences are in each version, how it varies from Windows 7, etc. The authors then go into the setup and personalization of the operating system. Each step is very well illustrated with every chapter having a "Chapter at a Glance Page" and figures throughout each chapter. Thus you have a good idea of what each chapter will be discussing before delving into the chapter itself.

Each "Step" increases your familiarity with Windows 8 and the Practice Exercises reinforce what the chapter topics are demonstrating. Some Exercises require Practice Files that are available on the O'Reilly website. Many exercises do not require downloaded files. All exercises are logical, informative, and reinforce what the authors are trying to teach. In every case where both Keyboard/Mouse and Touch Screen apply, they are presented and explained. All multiple ways to do something are presented. At the end of each exercise "Clean Up" instructions are given.

Unlike other Operating System "How To" Books, this book goes beyond the basics and covers such topics a Sky Drive, using Internet Explorer 10 (both the "app" version and the desktop version), Microsoft Market Place, etc. It covers each included "app" such as social apps (Email, Messaging, People, etc.) and multimedia apps (Pictures, Media Player etc.). In depth instruction is provided for connecting to a network and trouble shooting. In addition the book discusses safeguarding your computer with Anti-Virus software, firewalls, etc. Chapters are devoted to setting up the computer for additional users and safe guarding children. It talks about the many different types of users for the operating system and gives tips and help for all to get the most out of this new system.

The glossary is extremely informative and the appendixes cover three important topics:
1. Keyboard Shortcuts and Touch gestures
2. Enhancements and using Multiple Displays
3. A complete installation and upgrading guide

Kudos to Caprian Adrian, one of the authors for going over the book on O'Reilly and posting errata even before the official release.

This is a book that I can highly recommend both as a "How To" and a future reference guide. As near I can tell there are no pitfalls from late changes to the operating system. I use the RTM Windows 8 Pro version and everything worked exactly as presented in the book. The reader should use it as the title recommends "Step by Step." : "Originally published by the Denver Visual Studio User Group at [...]."

Lots of good info but needs better editing

Excellent info for all levels of users but some glaring typos. In addition, at least the kindle version tables and charts do not display well or require you to go to a website for viewing. Still give it 4 stars for excellent easy to understand information.

Needed for Windows 8

I was surprised at all the things I didn't know about Windows 8, even while using it. I think that Windows 8 needs a manual more than any operating system before. I've been reading the book on and off for a month, going back to certain sections, rereading some. I like the price point of this book and the pictures are a big help. Especially with a new operating system. Don't make the mistake of not buying the book and missing how to really make Win 8 work for you. You will not figure this OS out easily on your own.

Dr Eyel Lederman is Director, Centre for Professional Development in Manual Therapy, London, UK and a practicing osteopath. Eyal completed his PhD in physiotherapy at King’s College London where he researched the neurophysiology of manual therapy. He is actively involved in manual therapy research at UCL, exploring the clinical use of functional stretching. Eyal regularly teaches manual therapy techniques and the physiological basis of manual therapy in different schools across the UK and abroad. About the Author
"Terry and Gerry Audesirk" grew up in New Jersey, where they met as undergraduates. After marrying in 1970, they moved to California, where Terry earned her doctorate in marine ecology at the University of Southern California and Gerry earned his doctorate in neurobiology at the California Institute of Technology. As postdoctoral students at the University of Washington's marine laboratories, they worked together on the neural bases of behavior, using a marine mollusk as a model system. Terry and Gerry are now professors of biology at the University of Colorado at Denver, where they have taught introductory biology and neurobiology since 1982. In their research lab, funded by the National Institutes of Health, they investigate the mechanisms by which neurons are harmed by low levels of environmental pollutants. Terry and Gerry share a deep appreciation of nature and of the outdoors. They enjoy hiking in the Rockies, running near their home in the foothills west of Denver, and attempting to garden at 7000 feet in the presence of hungry deer and elk. They are long-time members of many conservation organizations. Their daughter, Heather, has added another focus to their lives. "Bruce E. Byers," a midwesterner transplanted to the hills of western Massachusetts, is a professor in the biology department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He's been a member of the faculty at UMass (where he also completed his doctoral degree) since 1993. Bruce teaches introductory biology courses for both nonmajors and majors; he also teaches courses in ornithology and animal behavior. A lifelong fascination with birds ultimately led Bruce to scientific exploration of avian biology. His currentresearch focuses on the behavioral ecology of birds, especially on the function and evolution of the vocal signals that birds use to communicate. The pursuit of vocalizations often takes Bruce outdoors, where he can be found before dawn, tape recorder in hand, awaiting the first songs of a new day.

Another Great Book for Kids from Scholastic

I love this small book. It's perfect for elementary aged children, in that it provides nuggets of information in a very palatable form. The information is divided into sections about "Business and Law", "Inventors and Innovators", "Leaders and Social Change" , "Music and Arts", "New Frontiers", and "Sports". Each person is given half a page which contains a picture of the individual, birth and death dates, a single paragraph about what they're known for, and then "fast facts".

For example, for Meriwether Lewis it says:

"With his lifelong interests in botany and zoology and his military service, he was chosen by President Thomas Jefferson to lead an expedition across the new country documenting its plants and animals. After his three-year trip with partner William Clark, he became the new governor of the Louisiana Territory."

The FAST FACTS are:

"Thomas Jefferson thought Lewis and Clark might find erupting volcanoes, mountains of sale, and wooly mammoths out west

"Members of the exploring team ate approximately 6 pounds of meat each day -- the equivalent of 24 hamburgers!"

Now if you have older kids, you KNOW that those "Fast Facts" are just the sort of interesting information that they love. Trivia on steroids! And, in fact, I have found that if I leave this book in the car or around the coffee table that the kids will pick it up and read about a few people without urging.

THE SKINNY:::
I think this book is great. It's published on cheap off-color paper but I don't care because it's kid-friendly and a fun way for them to get introduced to a variety of historical figures -- everyone from Charles Lindbergh to Langston Hughes, Steve Jobs to Robert Oppenheimer.

Being short is a huge advantage to time-challenged kids, but it has a downside in that parents might have to fill in the gaps. (If you don't know, there's always Google and Wikipedia.)

My kids -- currently 8 and 10-- will read a section when in the car. It gives us a chance to learn from each other and chat while we drive.

Super Introduction to Biography

I used this book with much success with classes of English as a Second Language students. They found the very short biographies of people they were familiar with to be challenging but readable. I have to admit when I decided to try the book out in class, I had my doubts, but my students just loved it, and were begging for more!

The greatest American inventor is missing here!!!!

This is originally a great idea for a book. Yet I was really disapointed to find that the author forgot to mention the inventor of the electric systems used today; the ac motor, the triphasic electrical system, the ac generator (as in Niagara Falls), wireless communications, remote control, logic circuits, fluorescent lamps and many other (patented or not) without which our lives today would be totally different.
What would America be without Nikola Tesla?!
The author should read "A Man out of Time" the biography of this forgotten electrical engineer who really changed America.

Also recomend "My inventions" by Tesla himself available free on the internet. I suggest the author substitutes Thomas Edison bio for his.

Somebody call a copy editor!

As far as the recipes go, they are interesting but a serious amount of editing would be most helpful. The 'pumpkin soup" calls for butternut squash (no pumpkin at all. Page 268 paperback edition) Italian meatballs directions are repeated on the second page (step #2 and 4 are repeated with step #3 in between. For one of the chicken recipes, it calls for Mat instead of meat. These may be picky complaints but when you pay more than a little money for a cookbook I expect the editing to be accurate, especially for recipes. It makes me a little wary of the amounts and ingredients called for. I will keep it but....

It's that time of year!

Shorter days means it's harder to get things done after work. Grab this book and make dinner easier! Rice is a cheap great base to make dinner with. This is the best book I've found for these recipes. Grab it!
