About the Author
Christopher A. Kearney is the Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He is also Director of the UNLV Child School Refusal and Anxiety Disorders Clinic. Dr. Kearney's research interests include school refusal behavior, selective mutism, posttraumatic stress disorder in maltreated youth, perfectionism, and other anxiety-related conditions in children and adolescents as well as issues of quality of life in persons with severe handicaps. The author of several books and numerous book chapters and journal articles on these topics, Dr. Kearney also conducts workshops for school districts and mental health and other agencies regarding school refusal behavior and selective mutism. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 12; Clinical Psychology), he is a recipient of the William Morris Award for Scholarship, the Barrick Scholar Award, the Barrick Distinguished Scholar Award, the Harry Reid Silver State Research Award, the Distinguished Teaching Award, the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award, and the Academic Advisor Award-Graduate from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Kearney received his B.A. in psychology and sociology from the State University of New York at Binghamton and his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from the State University of New York at Albany. He completed his internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before moving to Las Vegas.

About the Author

KENT KENNAN is Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught for many years. After completing his musical studies at the Eastman School of Music, he received the Prix de Rome in music. His compositions have been performed by many major orchestras, and a number have been published and recorded. He is the author of COUNTERPOINT, Fourth Edition (Prentice Hall, Inc. 1999).

DONALD GRANTHAM, D.M.A. in composition from the University of Southern California, is Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a winner of the Prix Lili Boulanger and the recipient of a Citation in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His works have been performed by many orchestras including Cleveland, Atlanta, Dallas, and the American Composers Orchestra.

good book expecting

This is my first time to buy a orchestration book including CD. I didn't check its content but I expect this will be helpful for my study.

Now I overviewed the book and listened to the sound files...
I see that this book is good as a basic testbook for classical music not for contemporary.
Sound files include variations of "orchestration" such as of instrumental groups, of doublings, of dynamics, and of pitch ranges with same melodies.
Unfortunately....its sound (files) quality is not good. ..too much noise...

I think this will be a good textbook for a beginner and don't expect its sound quality.

I was amazed when I received this book on orchestration. It really is helpfull in understanding Instrumentation as well as the orchestra as a whole.

As a fan of short pieces for piano and strings I find that the coverage given to the string section is extreamly helpfull. Notes on double and triple stops is very valuble and extreamly helpfull.

The book is full of exerts from many famous scores, and in my opinion, assist the student working without a teacher in deciding what scores they would like to purchase and study in full.

This is a great introduction to orchestration and instrumentation, and my favorite that I use frequently.

Gives me what I need

A great book for refreshing and reminding, as well as filling in the gaps. As an amature composure, I get stuck on different compositional aspects, whether it's an articulation or an expression, a need for checking an instruments registers, or what have you. This is a good all-around book covering much of the basics.

The production plants of today develop into modern service centers. Economic efficiency of modern added value is not a property of products alone but of the process. Decisive potential in business now is a question of process capability, rather than production capability. Process capability in business requires real-time systems for optimization. Business-IT needs to be developed from telecommunications and ERP to real time services, which are not offered by the prevailing ERP systems.

Today, only modern Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) offer real-time applications. They generate current as well as historic mappings of production facilities and thus they can be used as basis for optimizations. It is important to map the supply chain in real time. Increasing complexity in production requires an integrated view of the production and service facilities: detailed scheduling, status collection, quality, performance analysis, tracing of material and so on have to be recorded and displayed in an integrated way.

MESA (Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association) standardized applications. Further standardizations on this subject are already being developed, like ISA S95. Expectations regarding MES are high, related to TQM, SIX Sigma, production scheduling or optimized material movements.

Dr. J�rgen Kletti, born in 1948, studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, specializing in Engineering IT. Since 1990 MPDV has mainly been dealing with software products and services for the manufacturing industry. MPDV’s main product is the software system HYDRA, which offers, besides the MES functions, numerous applications to increase efficiency.

"I was very much impressed, and my students have been as well, with McCormick's 'different way of seeing the world.' For some time I had sensed, with the collapse of the 'second world,' that the old way of dividing the countries of the world into 'three worlds,' was becoming more irrelevant with each passing year. I did experiment with other typologies and systems of classification but found them to be unsatisfactory. What I especially like about McCormick's 'different way of seeing the world' is that he derives his six arenas of countries from differences in political (Freedom House rankings), economic (Economic Freedom Index rankings), and social (HDI rankings) variables. Differences in such variables make a lot of sense to students and help them to understand why a country belongs in this arena rather than another one."

"I can only agree with the comments of Howard J. Wiarda. . . . John McCormick has succeeded in balancing 'scholarship with lively, readable writing. . . . [His] prose flows nicely, and he includes the most important comparative politics concepts while using a provocative and innovative approach. . . . About the Author
John McCormick is Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Politics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He was educated at Rhodes University (South Africa), the University of London, and Indiana University, and has been a visiting professor at Exeter University and the University of Sussex in Britain, and at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. He has lived in, traveled to, or undertaken research in nearly 40 countries in North and Central America, Europe, Southeast Africa, and Southeast Asia. Before completing his Ph.D. in political science, he worked in the public sector for two environmental interest groups and was a consultant for a number of specialized agencies of the United Nations, including FAO and the UN Environment Program. His teaching and research interests lie in comparative politics and public policy, with particular interests in environmental policy, British politics, and the politics of the European Union. His other publications include EUROPEAN UNION POLITICS (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), EUROPEANISM (Oxford University Press, 2010), and CONTEMPORARY BRITAIN (Palgrave Macmillan, 2nd edition, 2006).

In a nutshell

Western-centric as all getup. I'm not someone who buys a lot of postmodern BS but this textbook is absurdly Western in outlook and tone. I'm sure a point-by-point elaboration could be done but it is incredible. Okay textbook, but very biased.

I found How to Run a Government very useful and interesting.
The conversational and simple, accessible way it comes across belies very in depth and useful ideas on delivery and accountability, which can be applied equally to government, business or other contexts. The case studies and anecdotes make the ideas come alive.

Foundational for study of culture & cognition

First, a confession: I was a student of Tom Lawson's when this book first came out, and I came to it with a favorable predisposition and was willing to put in the work required to master its contents. Only someone very well educated to begin with would find this an easy read, but it repays close study.

This book has remained one of my favorites, however, because it lays out--better than I have seen anywhere else--the philosophical and methodological considerations involved in studying the interaction of individual minds with social/cultural systems. The authors really make three major points:
(1) Explanation and interpretation are complementary endeavors in the study of human behavior.
(2) One way of illuminating cultural systems is by studying their representation in individual minds.
(3) There are some rather unexpected universal principles of religious ritual that play a vital role in structuring how people think about rituals.
Lawson & McCauley's Ritual form hypothesis (as they later named it) has held up (surprisingly) well under subsequent empirical study.

I find that when I need to think about these issues, this book is a key resource. McCauley & Lawson have since published a further development of this theory, in Bringing Ritual to Mind (2002), but I still find Rethinking Religion, where they lay out the foundations, to be my go-to resource for the theory.

Note: There are some really significant omissions in the rules they provide for the action-representation system. If you look carefully at them, you will notice that some of them omit possibilities that other rules imply. They did not develop these rules further elsewhere, so take the ones in the book as illustrative only.
