Considering how dominant the action film is in American popular culture, it's pretty astounding how little serious scholarship there's been about this important genre, outside of feminist rants (albeit justifiable), or overly intellectualized, post-modern deconstructions written by and for the miniscule audience of academics. ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER is the rare book which is written for the rest of us - for the educated, curious movie-goer who wants to think more seriously about movies we know and might even love.

While he's not above placing films in their historical context, or speculating about their larger meanings and their influences on society, author Lichtenfeld never loses sight of the fact that these movies are commercial enterprises - mass entertainments made within the confines of a commercial marketplace. He explores creative choices made by filmmakers and writers, and the book is peppered with interviews. Aware that form is content, Lichtenfeld delves into the stylistic features of the movies. He also explores how technological advances patently change the nature of these movies.

ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER combines the details fans love (think of a great DVD commentary) with serious scholarship. And best of all, it's highly readable (think extended New Yorker article) - not bogged down by the obfuscating, post-modern jargon that dominates academia. Highly recommended.

update of comprehensive, insightful, timely study of action films

Lichtenfeld has worked both in making films and as a film critic and commentator, including doing extra features for DVDs of several action films. He sees this popular film genre as "derived from the Western, film noir, and the police procedural (with special guest appearances made by the disaster film and others [with an evolution] quite analogous to the horror film." Though many films depict violence and mayhem, the action film is distinguished in that it ushered in a "new violence [which] would be deployed more to pleasure audiences than to jar them." This "new violence" came about from a shift in standards marking a "New Hollywood" and related changes in structures and pacing of films and cinematographic techniques such as lingering on the violence by slow-motion and close-ups. It is these and other elements, not merely the violence and plotting, which account for the new genre of the action film. The cluster of elements reflected changes in the culture's psychic relationship with violence and what it looked for in entertainment. Bonnie and Clyde is pointed to as a seminal action film, with the films Billy Jack, Shaft, and The French Connection closely related to it in paving the way for the action film by demonstrating its popularity and giving guidance for filmmakers. Advertising, publicity, and marketing of action films has as much a part in the author's multifaceted study of this major contemporary film genre as film history, film editing, and cinematography. References to numerous action films over the past couple of decades make for enjoyable as well as engaging and stimulating reading.

A Wonderful Read, and Book That Will Continue to Add Value to Your life....not to be missed!

What a wonderful book about the design process. Katherine describes the design process in a format that is both playful and approachable for readers of all ages. Many times I have found it difficult to start the process of bringing an idea or concept into action, although next time I think about starting a project, I will easily be able to reference little Emily and her playful and experimental attitude about creating spaces that inspire and inform the soul. I love everything about this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone who simply wants to add a little cheer to their day and gather valuable information at the same time.

This book is creative and inspiring

Emily is a wonderful child with a whimsical mind. She daydreams of the things she loves, and imagines how she could decorate her new room with these things. This book is creative and inspiring! Emily focuses on the things she loves: the Grandmother Tree in the backyard, the magic mirror, seashells, sandcastles, seagulls, and the colors she loves. This book can help children's creativity grow as they imagine how to decorate their space with the things they love.

Emily is organized and she plans out how she wants to decorate her room by making lists and drawings. This teaches children the importance of making plans before taking actions. By surrounding herself with the things she loves, Emily creates a supportive atmosphere. This book teaches readers that creating atmospheres filled with the things you love can help you live out your dreams. This book also ends with a wonderful guide for readers to design spaces that make them happy. This book could be a great tool to inspire young interior decorators, or any reader who would like to learn about decorating inspiring rooms.

Everything I Need to Begin a Design Project (and, a cute little story as a bonus!)

First of all, I couldn't design my way our of a cardboard box. So, the fact that this is written in simple terms, that even a child can understand, gives me hope that I could actually put my passions into a blank space. Katherine Allen obviously has some fabulous credentials and could speak eloquently about space and design. But, this colorful book tells me she has a fresh, child's eye when she considers space. With the workbook in the back, it's a GREAT primer for anyone who is tackling their first (second...third...) decor project.

Aside from all that ^^^... This is the CUTEST little book! I L-O-V-E the illustrations!

Concise but comprehensive overview of SUAS algorithmic design

Beard and McLean's textbook concisely covers the guidance, navigation and control algorithms used in small unmanned aircraft. The text is written so that a reader unfamiliar with some background material can "take it on faith" and move ahead with the book's progression through the material and the bibliography is certainly adequate with supporting material. A very enjoyable aspect of the book is the end of chapter questions form a single design project that spans the entire book so that if one works through all the chapters at the conclusion the reader has a full, rudimentary SUAS simulation system, and the construction of this simulation emphasizes many of the concepts introduced in the book and allows the reader to easily experiment with design changes. Due to the very consice nature of the book, there are many instances where I felt like the authors introduce material without even mentioning alternate approaches. SUAS-GNC is a rich field and while this book will certainly leave the reader with a comprehensive understanding of one approach, the reader may not have an appreciation for the myriad of other approaches or the tradeoffs involved.

The website makes a poor attempt at helping readers with the many errors

Bought this book with high expectations, unfortunately, it's disappointing on many levels. The level of the material presented is comprehensive enough and broken down into somewhat manageable pieces to follow along. The biggest downfall of the book is the many typos/errors and insufficient clarification on examples. The website makes a poor attempt at helping readers with the many errors. The website also includes a section for users to comment and request feedback but the authors refuse to provide any feedback or updates. There are many concepts that are mentioned in the book on a very superficial level and the authors do a very poor job at providing the correct amount of detail, some of the solutions to the equations seems to appear out of the blue as if by magic. It would be nice if the authors at least made an attempt to respond to reader's concerns, especially since we're the ones buying their books.

Great Textbook For Autonomous Robotic Systems Course

This was the textbook for my Autonomous Robotic Systems course. With the help of the professor we used the concepts in this book to make Matlab and Simulink simulations to rotate and translate simple 3D models of vehicles, create waypoint navigation algorithms, animate the dynamics of applied moments and forces, and create an autonomous control system for a quad-copter. For those who aren't in a college course that uses this book, the website for the book has Matlab and Simulink files so that you can work on similar projects. The book is incredibly helpful for understanding the theory, and the Appendices have great examples of Matlab code for vehicle plotting/animating, translation, rotation, and the creation of S-Functions to make your own Simulink blocks.

Background knowledge in differential equations, dynamic systems, Matlab, and Simulink is required if you want to learn this stuff effectively.

Not worth the Time and the Money

I am a student who happens to have read both John Hull's 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' and his 'Fundamentals'. To say that 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' is a good book is a great understatement, and can even be considered an insult. Yet, this book, which is targeted at readers who are not as acquainted with derivatives fails to impress. Through out the book you can feel how John Hull struggles to explain things in a simple manner. Sadly, his efforts have failed, and this is most evident when my fellow classmates had a hard time understanding the materials starting from Swaps. When we reached the section on options pricing, the book lacks the rigorous math that is needed for students to fully appreciate the beauty of deriving things like Black-Scholes. Overall, if you are a beginner, go straight to 'Options, Futures, and Derivatives'. This book is not worth wasting time over.

Ripoff + Worthless

Long story short, this book is a ripoff and won't help you much on learning about futures markets and options. As a 4th year finance student, I can without any doubt say my learning experience has never been this miserable! Here's a summary of what it's like:

1. Language: Wording is terrible. Definitions are wordy, hard to understand in general, and you will encounter typos quite often.
2. Practice questions: To see answers for the practice problems at the end of each chapter, you have to purchase a separate book that costs over $40 and answers for "further questions" are not even given unless you register yourself as an instructor on the Pearson website.
3. In some questions, data don't match (e.g. in one of the questions he requires us to find a margin requirement in Oct 2010, while the data he gives ranges from 2013 to 2015 - wake up Mr. Hull! smh..) as if the author didn't give a crap about "his students".

I spent 4 months with this book for I was required to read it for class, but I can surely say it is a book that gradually annoys its readers as time proceeds. Please persuade your instructor not to use this book if you are enrolled in a class dealing with this matter. I am serious.

why are we still playing these games in 2007?

By games I mean the fact that the answers to about a third of the questions are found in a solutions manual that, last time I looked (in early Sept '07), was unavailable for purchase. The answers to another third of the questions are not to be found anywhere. The answers to the last third of the questions are in the book--but these questions are not very interesting or challenging. Why must we play this game? Why not just put all the answers in the back of the book? (I know, I know: it's all about the money, etc. But still . . .)

As for the content of the book, I'm told that this isn't Hull's authoritative book (that would be 'Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives'). I feel like a sucker for having bought it. Is it good to make your customer's feel like suckers, Mr. Hull?

Useful for Cultivating respectful guests versus rude tourists

I have a fascination with the country, culture and people of India and it is my dream to one day go there. An Indian friend advised me that it would take "studying" to prepare myself to go. I took this to heart and began looking for resources to accomplish this task. He understood that I would not want to offend the natives while I was a guest in their country but he explained that the natives would be burdened with the fear of offending ME if I was in error. I think this book is perfect for the objective of understanding not only what customs to respect but why those customs are in place. I found this book answering so many of my questions about why there are so many differences in the customs I have observed due to the religious and geographical regions. I was influenced to select this book by another review of a native of India who recommends this book to his friends before they travel to India. That gave me the extra bit of confidence I was looking for before finalizing my decision to purchase this book. I am so pleased and delighted with this book, I am absorbing each page. It is not a book about where to stay or what to see but more a book about culture and clues to recognizing the differences in the various people groups. The author deciphers such things as how a woman ties her sari or a man is dressed revealing where someone is from and what religions are associated with. I believe this book will help me meet my objective to be a responsible traveler where I am a respectful guest versus a rude (albeit ignorant)tourist.

Very good

I was a motivated reader: I read this after I returned from a month with my new wife's family in India. The book helps me understand and deal with patterns that were hard to anticipate or accept. It is the first treatment I have ever seen, of the difficulty I have as a Mason-Dixon Line baby boomer becoming functional in the employer/servant relationship that is part of India (whether you like it or not), and the oddly (to American eyes) hierarchical behavior I have sometimes seen in the software industry. It contains a wealth of information for readers of either gender, and the longer you plan to stay in India, the more useful is the covered material. The well-spoken female author addresses details of the uniquely woman's world in India that can help me understand the forces at play in my wife's life there and in her perceptions and habits in the US. The flip side is that the author has less to offer about relationships between men, but capitalistic globalization's male domination suggests that topic will be covered in another book, "Speaking of India: Bridging the Communication Gap When Working With Indians" when I get to it.
Because of its extreme diversity, to go deeper into India would have required the author to write separate books for each region, so I thought she did an excellent job and stopped where she had to. I found Culture Shock! India compelling to the end.

Insights were spot-on, prepared me well for 1-week business trip

I purchased this book in preparation for my first-ever business trip to India. I returned just last week and am so pleased with the insights and knowledge this book provided me with prior to my visit. I don't mean to exaggerate, but there were dozens of experiences during my stay where I said to myself, "This is exactly what the book taught me!". I found myself in many unexpected situations, like in some family homes, where I was very well prepared to not make a total fool of myself, and at the same time understand many of the things that were going on. I didn't purchase any other guides, but also did not feel like I was lacking in any area after returning from the trip. Yes, the book does cater to a slightly broader audience (to include those who are staying long-term), but even for a quick business trip the information in the book was relevant, detailed, accurate, and exceptionally helpful. It doesn't take long to read so don't be tempted to skim... I was surprised how useful some of the topics were in practice.

Algorithms & Data Structures in Python book appears to be written for both beginners and experts.

The topics are well organized. The explanations are well detailed and supplemented with Python code. The book would help any interested reader understand the algorithms and data structures themselves while giving a good hands-on explanation of workings of Python. The algorithms related discussion builds the underlying concepts in a clear and methodical manner.

All in all, a good book to get you started with either Python or Computer Algorithms; or both.

Excellent algorithms book!!!

This is the first python book I'm reading. I was interested in reading this as it discusses algorithm and DS in Python and not merely Python as a language. This book gradually introduced new topics and the overall flow of this book was good. Reading this I felt it was a very good interview prep book. I learnt a lot of new things reading sections on statistical simulation and computational geometry. For me the best part is the clear and concise way in which the algorithms are presented.

Enjoyable Python book

This book starts from very basic Python elements and builds up to more complex ideas quickly. A fairly broad range of topics is covered, but no prior knowledge of Python is required since the authors also give a good introduction to programming in Python. I found this book to be a very good read, and I learned a number of useful things from it. If I were to teach a course on Python programming, I would use this book.
