Wonderful Overview of Cognitive Dynamics But a bit too combative...

The Authors networked at an Indiana University conference, and their list of experts produced "the" state of the art overview of Cognitive Dynamics (CD). The authors begin by creating a tempest in a teapot by trying to tack against the wind of "computational models" of cognition. With a kind of "my math is better than yours" logic, they fault "cognition as computer" by using a continuous vs. discrete differential to argue that computer models of the brain or cognition don't take time into consideration.

In my day job I teach computers to model dynamical systems for physics. I can't split hairs as finely as these authors, because when you transition from dynamical systems math to the circuits that "do" it in assembly, Python, C, etc., you ARE computing. Maybe not in the strict sense of defining what a computer IS, and then arguing against your own definition, but when a drum beat gets fast enough, it becomes a tone. A particle can be superpositioned as a wave. The authors seem to have been tricked by t1,t2,... ...tn in thinking that "computation" can't handle time dynamically-- of course it can! Just speed it up guys.

Subtracting the political bantering, the articles chosen are fairly representative of the research still being done in CD, including especially in language and decision making. The math behind Dynamical Systems (at least from my viewpoint as an Engineer) is far more complex than most psych liberal arts grads usually encounter. The interesting thing is that DST has been used for a couple decades now in the "foundation" cognitive fields-- neurons, synapses, etc.-- basically, electronics, where those of us who teach computers to think work. The seminal book on that topic, with plenty of clinical and "phase oscillation" DST depth, is Rhythms of the Brain

The authors again trash talk computation by jabbing at utility functions, but when you look deeply at their model of choice, by introducing somatics, the environment, time, etc. the actual math comes suspiciously close to economists modeling those same utility functions with dynamical systems, that the authors trashed as "computation." Can't we all just get along?

This book is a must read if you have a vision of the future that says math will eventually permeate everything. The authors are a bit unfair in comparing computational models to an earth centered universe, because they leave out algorithms in their discussions. When you integrate dynamical systems algorithms, especially with advanced Python, FPGA and VHDL libraries and circuits (which are, by the way, used all the time in AI today-- to model physics engines that learn, for example), the "competitive" model distinctions fade and integrate much more than they did in 1998. For example, the authors say that computation doesn't take time into account in an iteration example (discrete/continuous zing): it seems they need to watch a more recent chess playing computer "think"-- constrain the time with a couple inequalities, and watch the change!

Not that they, and especially others like Noe (Out of Our Heads: Why You Are Not Your Brain, and Other Lessons from the Biology of Consciousness) don't have a valid point-- we are far more than little humunculi computers under a bell-- but we're also far more than the math beneath dynamical systems, with time, with bodies, and with environments. We need all the models, including AI, then still don't get much more than the tip of the iceberg of cognition, if we're willing to add a dash of humility to this most important of all topics. We are getting quite close, with AI USING DST, to making automated, animated characters that are very hard to differentiate from humans. From that standpoint, this volume is a bit dated, but still very important.

About the Author
John C. Kotz is an emeritus State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College at Oneonta. Educated at Washington and Lee University, as well as Cornell University, he held National Institutes of Health postdoctoral appointments at the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology in England and at Indiana University. Professor Kotz has co-authored three textbooks in several editions - INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, and THE CHEMICAL WORLD - along with the INTERACTIVE GENERAL CHEMISTRY CD-ROM. He also has published research on inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry. He was a Fulbright Lecturer and Research Scholar in Portugal in 1979 and a visiting professor there in 1992, as well as a visiting professor at the Institute for Chemical Education (University of Wisconsin, 1991-1992) and at Auckland University in New Zealand (1999). He also was an invited speaker at a meeting of the South African Chemical Society and at the biennial conference for secondary school chemistry teachers in New Zealand. In addition, a recent tenure as a mentor of the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team, Professor Kotz has received numerous honors, including a State University of New York Chancellor's Award (1979), a National Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992), the Estee Lectureship in Chemical Education at the University of South Dakota (1998), the Visiting Scientist Award from the Western Connecticut Section of the American Chemical Society (1999), and the first annual Distinguished Education Award from the Binghamton (New York) Section of the American Chemical Society (2001).

Paul M. Treichel, received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. After a year of postdoctoral study in London, he assumed a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as department chair from 1986 through 1995 and was awarded a Helfaer Professorship in 1996. He has held visiting faculty positions in South Africa (1975) and in Japan (1995). Retiring after 44 years as a faculty member in 2007, he is currently Emeritus Professor of Chemistry. During his faculty career he taught courses in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and scientific ethics. Professor Treichel's research in organometallic and metal cluster chemistry and in mass spectrometry, aided by 75 graduate and undergraduate students, has led to more than 170 papers in scientific journals. John R. Townsend, Professor of Chemistry at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, completed his B.A. in Chemistry as well as the Approved Program for Teacher Certification in Chemistry at the University of Delaware. After a career teaching high school science and mathematics, he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at Cornell University, where he also received the DuPont Teaching Award for his work as a teaching assistant. After teaching at Bloomsburg University, he joined the faculty at West Chester University, where he coordinates the chemistry education program for prospective high school teachers and the general chemistry lecture program for science majors. He has been the university supervisor for more than 60 prospective high school chemistry teachers during their student teaching semester. David A. Treichel, Professor of Chemistry at Nebraska Wesleyan University, received a B.A. degree from Carleton College. He earned a M.S. and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Northwestern University. After post-doctoral research at the University of Texas in Austin, he joined the faculty at Nebraska Wesleyan University. It all Starts with a Sale

Sales are the lifeblood of any company. Sales are closely tied to financial statements. Sales success usually means financial success.

As the title suggests, Schiffman has what he calls 50 rules. I agree with almost all of them but some of them I feel more passionate about.

Rule number 35 is spent at least 75% of your time gathering information. One of the things I've learned in both sales and negotiation is that the person with the information has the advantage. The Internet makes information gathering extremely easy. There's no reason not to lose on this one.

Rule number 24 is make calls for an hour a day. One thing I have often seen in developing company says they simply don't spend enough time making sales calls. Without spending the time clearly the sales will never happen. And although he suggest making calls for an hour a day, I think double or triple or quadruple makes more sense.

I was interested to see rule 30 was to live off peak this is one of the rules I use all the time. Like some of his other rules, sales are tied to good time management.

One thing I like about the book is that each one of the 50 rules basically stands on their own. This means the book can be read gradually over a long period of time and the benefits will still be derived. The book is concise and easy to read and I would recommend to anybody who wants to increase their sales.

Move at least one deal forward each day
People live their life two weeks at a time
The power of the story
The greatest practice players become the greatest players
Know when to move on
Find out what makes sense to the buyer
No Rolodex is up to date
Make 15 cold/prospect calls every day

He has one of the better sets of tips with leaving voice mail -
As he says, you should spend your time 40% prospecting, 20% presenting, 20% on product knowledge and 15% on professional development.

Best Book on Marriage I've Ever Read!

I have read many books on marriage over the past 34 years. Lessons For A Happy Marriage is by far the best one I have ever read. I just wish I had read this years ago. It would have saved me thousands of dollars in marriage counseling. Paul Friedman has been able to explain how to get your marriage on track in the most simplest of ways. After reading this book twice now I am making some changes that in two weeks have greatly enhanced my relationship with my wife. Paul Friedman has hit a homerun with this book and anyone married or considering getting married needs to read this one! It is a very easy read with practical ideas that will enhance your marriage immediately.

About the Author

Allen R. Angel received his AAS in Electrical Technology from New York City Community College. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. He also served as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Rutgers University from 1967–73. He served as the President of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and the Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). He is the recipient of many awards including a number of NISOD Excellence in Teaching Awards, NYSMATYC's Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award, and AMATYC's President Award. Allen enjoy tennis, worldwide travel, and visiting with his children and granddaughter.

Dennis Runde received his BS and MS in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin—Platteville and Milwaukee, respectively. He has a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida. He has been teaching�for twenty years at State College of Florida, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties and for ten years�at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. Besides coaching little league baseball,�his other interests include history,�politics, fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He and his wife Kristin stay busy keeping up with their three sons–Alex, Nick, and Max.

8th edition of this book

This book is an assigned book at MCC for the 098 Math course. Likewise the Intermediate book by this same author is for their 104 Math Course. This comes as no suprise since the author was the head of the mathematics department many years ago at MCC.

This review is for the Elementary Algebra book

This book has too much going on it. It is very confusing. Visually its like they spent time trying to make it look good versus giving you the information you require to do math correctly. The overusage of colors throughout the book makes it very distracting to the reader. Many things are in orange, yellow and blue making it very distracting with all of the callouts it the equivalent of an obstacle course in a textbook.

Many of the examples shown in the book lack critical information needed to complete all the problems at the end of the section. For instance in some of the examples they will show you how to do a certain problem, for example say x 1/2 +8x - y. In the examples they do not explain what to do when you have a variable in front of a fraction on a problem such as this. Their is no place to reference it. So this book only partially teaches you what you need to know. As you go through the section questions you will find that many of the questions do not have examples that can even be remotely used as a basis for what to do with the problem you are trying to solve. The book does not take a logical approach either.

I find that the book also has issues where what they are asking you questions on isn't taught until the next section which makes me ask if you havent been taught something yet how can you possibly answer it. This only further leads to anxiety over math.

Many times the teachers will tell you to get the student solution manual if you do not understand the book. This is an added cost and I believe a way for the book publisher to make more money along with the college. If you buy a book to learn from it should be written well enough that you should not need a seperate book. Also if all the information was contained in the book like it should be, you should also not need the solution manual.

The older versions of this book may have been better but the 8th edition is a disaster. The videos they reference in the book are from several years ago and have not been updated to reflect the examples in the book (where they have a camera icon). These icons are used to show the reader that their is a video for that particular math problem.

Perfect book to reintroduce algebra

I used this book in my first back-to-college algebra class, and it is a great book. Easy to understand explanations and step-by-step instructions made algebra way easier than I remembered! Please note: the companion solutions manual has many wrong answers. The book itself, however, is great. If your class is using this book, you will do well.
