Serious REST

As is common with O'Reilly's Cookbooks, the style of this book is very terse and to the point. There is not much handholding. The intended audience seems to be system architects who already know what they are doing, but who need to know what they should be aiming for when they want to be RESTful. The "recipes" in this Cookbook are more like Best Practices, since figuring out how to implement them is left as an excercise for the reader.

Compared to my previous readings on REST, this book strongly emphasizes the use of consistent XML formats. For me, this was the most important lesson in the book. It is not enough to just use PUT and DELETE: in order to really think in terms of "representations," you need to design meaningful XML. Along these lines, Allamaraju's discussion of the Atom protocol is particularly interesting.

Easy to read, packed full of details and great presentation.

I had been following "What is REST" tutorials online for the last few weeks as I was working on an API for an upcoming SaaS product. Unfortunately there were still some nitty-gritty details behind the tenants of RESTful design that weren't clicking in my brain, making it hard for me to really grok if I was following the intended design guidelines correctly or just faking it like so many other services do.

Picking this book up after a recommendation from an HN reader, I got 4 chapters in before the smoke cleared in my brain and I had multiple "Ah ha!" moments such that the whole concept cleared up for me in a matter of days.

It could be the writing style or presentation, but I just found it really easy to digest and answering all my questions as they popped up in my head.

An excellent resource for anyone else working on RESTful API design.

Get it just for the security chapter

This book provides a clear and concise description of REST and how to make your web services accesible via REST. I got the book because I was struggling with authenticating a Restful web service. The chapter on security is worth the price of the book. I finally understood OAuth's three-legged and two-legged protocols, and was able to build a protected web service API. The book is not tied to a specific programming language, which I think is good as it focuses on core concepts instead. It was easy for me to work on Python and Javascript to get the OAuth operation in place.

Interesting Lecture

This paperback book is actually one of three lectures by Albert Pike. It mainly speaks to the doctrines of Zarathustra, and the history and legends of the Iranian branch, familiarly known as the Medes and Persians of the great Aryan race. He skips around and quotes other authors/scholars on many of the topics, which helps in understanding. It is not an easy read for the average lay person, and I re-read many pages in order to better grasp the meanings. Being a person who searches for the truth about everything, through historical documentation - especially things of religious origins, I found the lecture extremely interesting. The Gathas are sacred, short prayers, whose meaning, as well as the dialect, is hard to interpret. Albert Pike does a good job of enlightening us as to their probable meanings in this lecture. The supposed Trinity of Zarathustra was "Thought, Word, Deed or Act." I found that many of the same precepts in the doctrine of Zarathustra can be found in later Christianity. This lecture is not for the average, close-minded person, but to the truth-seekers, it will be an interesting, if not easy, read.

Excellent Lecture .

This book is very informative and a very valuable document of the history of an ancient religion in Persia . The author truly represents the doctrine of Zarathustra and quotes other authors who have studied this ancient prophets life . The book explains well The Aryan Race which is very interesting for me who wishes to learn more of her background . I recommend this book for every person who has a passion in history of the ancient civilization . I also find it extremely helpful when author explains the roots of Persian language and the language of Avesta , Zoraoasterian holly book.
I'm reading this book with an open mind and share my thoughts with my family and friends on this tolerant and amazing doctrine of an ancient religion which inspired our heart & soul .

About the Author
Heather Masri is a full-time faculty member at New York University, where she earned her PhD in literature and has served as assistant dean in the General Studies Program, an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Although her academic specialty is eighteenth-century English literature, she is a generalist with broad, interdisciplinary interests whose courses include literature, art, music, and film. Science Fiction: Stories and Contexts (2009) grows out of her popular seminar on science fiction and technology, one of a series of writing intensive courses she’s taught on literature and critical theory. Her love of science fiction dates from third grade, when her mother read her A Wrinkle in Time while her father demonstrated the theory of tesseracts by making folds in the bedsheet. She is a member of the Science Fiction Research Association, and has been teaching science fiction at NYU since 1990.

What a little gem of a book!

This absolutely wonderful book illuminates the world of childhood like no other. Griswold examines dozens of childrens* stories and discovers certain qualities common to all of them--snugness,scariness, smallness, lightness, and aliveness. He shows us how these qualities are central to a childs perception of the world. Lucidly written, convincingly argued, profusely illustrated, this is a book that every parent who reads stories to his or her child should have. And its* a gorgeous book as well--an example of the bookmaking art at its best. *(the apostrophe doesn*t seem to work on this computer--Im not illiterate)

A perfect book for undergraduates

For anyone looking for a short book to accompany a college course in children's lit, this book is it. It is simply written, not marred by abstruse critical jargon, and discusses a host of interesting things worth covering in an undergraduate course. And Johns Hopkins did a beautiful job with the book itself. It's a little work of art, the kind of thing students will keep.

Pretty Worthless

Griswold's treatment of the books is disappointingly shallow. He makes a number of undeniably true observations about what children like, how they behave, what they seek out, etc - and then notes that various well-known books satisfy those desires. E.g., children like to feel snug, like to enclose themselves in small spaces - and guess what? that's exactly what you find in various children's books. Griswold doesn't devote much time to asking "why?" or to explaining the significance of any of these desires. The book is enjoyable but by the time you're done reading the author's very superficial discussion, your reaction is, "well, I could have told you all that off the top of my head."

A Winner!

James Gelvin's "Arab Uprisings" is a must read if you've been trying to follow the events unfolding in the Middle East. I have tried to keep up with the "where" and "why of each rebellion and/or revolution, but the sheer numbers often made it confusing that often left me with more questions than answers. Gelvin's book was what I was looking for. It sheds light on the historical, political, and cultural aspects that each country has undergone by linking the various uprisings in the differing states (such as Tunisia and Egypt, Libya and Yemen, Algeria and Syria, and the monarchies). The book is clearly written, and the Q &A format makes for an easy but substantive read. Each answer reads like a mini-essay, and I particularly enjoyed the answers to "Where did the phrase `Arab Spring' come from?", "How appropriate is it to describe events in the Arab world?", "What are the ten biggest myths about the Egyptian uprising?", and "Was Qaddafi crazy or crazy like a fox?" The author obviously knows his history as well as the contemporary issues confronting the region. (His "Modern Middle East" and "Israel/Palestine Conflict" are also must reads.) The last section of "Arab Uprisings" is illuminating in showing the impact of the uprisings on both the American and Iranian positions in the region, on the Israel-Palestine Conflict, and on al-Qaeda. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Gelvin fulfills his promise with the book's sub-title, "What Everyone Needs to Know," because I walked away having a greater understanding of what's going on in the Middle East. I now can watch the continuing unfolding of events with both the information and confidence that the author has provided.

Written in a question-and-answer format, Galvin clearly explains the causes of the revolutions that swept the Arab world, drawing parallels between nations and clarifying the complex interplay of economics, demographics and politics in the political change that is still unfolding.

The book begins with a brief primer on the Arab world - the cultural similarities and the broad economic and political climate of the region before the uprisings began. Galvin then argues that the revolutions were the result of four factors: economic promises made by the regimes to their people that fell apart, a "youth bulge", food crises and political brittleness of their autocracies. While there are some variations, these four themes are revisted as the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Libya and Syria are explored in detail.

The final chapter, in which Galvin fields questions about the "long view" of the Arab Spring is a bit odd, the questions more along the lines of political science than history. To his credit, Galvin reminds readers that these events are still unfolding, writing, "The moral of the story (of the uprisings) is that historical analogies do not explain and do not instruct, although for historians and history geeks their entertainment value cannot be overestimated." Similar questions about the role and impact of American foreign policy in fomenting the Arab Spring and what the implications of the uprisings are for the United States are similarly swatted away, and rightfully so, I think.

While events are still being played out regarding the effects of the spring of 2011, this is an outstanding primer on the subject - rich in detail and clearly and simply written. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the region or recent events there.

Good book which includes audible

I have class next semester and I bought this book earlier because I'm an international student and it comes audio with it and that will help me to improve my english language.
for those how native speaker I recommend them to read about Arabia revolution from many books in order to get clear information. I think this book mention writer's thought as well.
- if you interest to have this book please compare it with real live in Arab countries.
- the audio save your time if you interest only to listen.
- If you have a kindle device. please pay the E-book first then the audio because it comes cheaper after you buy e-book.
- if your first language not enough I give you a high recommend to pay it with audio to improve your language.
