Starred Review. These two stories by Sacco bookend his definitive works of comics journalism on the Bosnian War, The Fixer and Safe Area Gorazde. Like those books, these stories take readers with Sacco as he searches for some truth in all the conjecture and confronts his own fears and suspicions about the war. In the first story, "Christmas with Karadzic," Sacco goes to great, often uproarious lengths to get an interview with the notorious Bosnian war criminal Radovan Karadzic as the leader attends Christmas services. The story climaxes with Sacco observing Karadzic, noting, "I feel nothing intimidating about his presence, nothing extraordinary about this man indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal... a man I have despised with all my heart for years." Rather than reporting the usual facts about Karadzic, Sacco shows him at his most mundane and, consequently, most revealing. In all of his work, Sacco displays a similar knack for seeing a subject from an entirely unexpected view, as he does with the second story, "Soba." The titular character is a regular guy and wanna-be rock star who becomes a war hero to his fellow Sarajevans. His story illuminates the conditions of wartime life and gives readers a lively character to hang onto amid the destruction. This work is painstakingly drawn and reported—it is both great cartooning and moving, revealing reportage. (June)

Sacco continues his comic-strip reportage on the Bosnian war with this collection of two shorter stories whose events predate Safe Area Gora_de (2000) and The Fixer (2003). In "Christmas with Karadzic," Sacco joins a group of hard-bitten journalists trying to score an interview with Serbian leader Radovan Karadzic, the driving force behind the siege of Sarajevo. "Soba" follows a charismatic Bosnian artist as he hits the bars to obliterate memories of his army job planting land mines. "Christmas" is a brutally honest, first-person account of an encounter with evil; but "Soba" is the stronger piece, thanks to its fascinating protagonist, whose real art is for survival. Sacco's other reports from Bosnia are more substantive, but these stories share their expressive drawing, incisive observation, and shrewd combination of jarring visual perspectives, comic exaggeration, and black humor, which so well convey the chaos of the war. Sacco's Bosnian dispatches remain potent, but his longtime fans may feel he has gone to this particular well too often, and wish he would turn to new subjects. Gordon Flagg

Another triumph for Sacco

Anyone who has read any of Sacco's other tomes knows what you'll find with this title. Sacco manages to take you inside Bosnia by depicting himself and his struggles warts and all. It is an honest look at the war because Sacco is being honest with himself. He doesn't side with one party but simply presents life as he sees it. For a cartoonist, there can be no greater compliment.

Great intro

This is a short collection, but a wonderful introduction into the effects of the war in Bosnia on the people. It's touching, well-drawn, and made me want to do research to learn more about the situation. It's a good starter piece into Sacco's work, which is always lovely.

Impressive results with concise recipes

If you make and share anything from this book, prepare to be overwhelmed with people asking you things like, "you can make marshmallows at home?", "how did you do this?!", "how is it possible that these are so much better than marshmallows from the bag?!"...

My favorite thing about the book is that there is absolutely no ambiguity. The author tells you what brand of ingredients were tested, what she recommends, the exact temperatures required, which mixer setting to use and for how long. None of that, "mix on medium until it looks like some obscure substance you're not familiar with as a comparison." These details make the recipes so foolproof and will give you amazing results even on your first batch!

The book itself is also just so charming. The front and back covers are squishy, the images are beautiful and full of vibrant colors, the writing is witty and sweet. The recipes range from vanilla, which is simply amazing, to creative combos like maple bacon marshmallows - how fun! The book also includes a section of desserts that utilize marshmallows as a component if you're not into eating an entire pan of marshmallows... Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Perfectly puffy marshmallows in lots of wonderful flavors

If you've ever had a fresh, made from scratch marshmallow, you know the flavor and texture is so different from the store-bought bags that it's like a different food entirely. The fresh one, that's what a marshmallow should be.

Shauna Sever starts her book with an introduction to the key ingredients, sugar, gelatin, water, salt, vanilla extract , coating and corn syrup. The corn syrup is used for consistent results in small amounts, substitutes can be tries and she suggests a few. I used an organic non-HFCS type that has worked well for me in the past, golden syrup would probably work as well. The coatings are the powders you cover the finished marshmallows in to keep them from sticking.

Then the tools, including tips on how to calibrate your candy thermometer and why you need a stand mixer.

She also explains how the recipes are broken down, starting with the "bloom" which is the process of blooming the gelatin, the syrup, which is what the candy is made from, and the mallowing, which is where you start mixing your bloom and syrup into a gorgeous mass of marshmallows, and the ingredients you might mix in at this point.

Then you get to the good stuff. The recipes. Almost all the recipes have variations listed as well.

She starts with nice, basic marshmallows. Vanilla, chocolate and filled marshmallows. She also includes a vegan recipe and one that uses egg white meringue. The meringue is my favorite for it's light, fluffy incredible texture. Also a recipe for the best marshmallow creme ever. It's the recipe I'll use most since it's very simple to make, and tastes amazing. She suggests it for frostings and fillings. I recommend it with peanut butter on crackers. She also has 2 recipes for graham crackers, one of them is gluten free and vegan.

The next chapter is fruity marshmallows which use purees, juices and essential oils for true to the original flavors. These can get some coloring from the juices used and would be perfect for parties.

Tips for shapes explains how to make very attractive marshmallows like the twisted ropes on the cover.

Happy Hour as alcohol infused treats for your next adult get together. Inspired by classic drinks with tips for mallowing with alcohol in the mix.

Then my favorite chapter. Gourmet treats. These are the marshmallow recipes that made me think of friends who would appreciate them, and this is the chapter that inspired my daughter. I like the salted ones, caramel and peanut too much. She likes the maple-bacon and the spicy Aztec chocolate. She gives tips for gift giving in this chapter.

Kids in a Candy Store are the brightly colored, candy flavored puffs that will thrill children with fun ideas for presentation.

The last chapter is full of recipes that use marshmallows, rice crispy treats, hot chocolate, a spicy hot vanilla, and a wonderful s'more cupcake that's toasted with a kitchen torch.

If you've had an interest in making your own marshmallows, I really recommend this book. It's gorgeous, with a softly padded cover, bright pastel illustrations and lots of full color photos. It also contains a lot of great ideas that can be a starter point to your own creations.

Great purchase, loads of eye candy photos

I don't purchase as many cookbooks as I would like because I usually feel that they aren't worth the 3-4 decent recipes I get out of them, but I am glad I made this purchase. Sometimes it's nice to have the book in hand rather than searching the net for good recipes and let's face it, this book is just cute.

Last night I made Passionfruit marshmallows. This particular recipe variation isn't actually in the book, but I based it on the Strawberry recipe and got great results. I'll admit, I was a bit wary of how they were going to turn out based on two factors. One, I have never made marshmallows with dividing the corn syrup like this book calls for. Then I wasn't sure if the amount of Passionfruit puree was going to be too acidic or watery. My fears were cast aside when this morning I turned out a nice pan of amazing treats! The tartness of the Passionfruit(Bioron brand)is amazing with the sweetness of the marshmallow.The texture of this marshamallow recipe is just perfect.

One thing that my husband pointed out in reading the recipe to me as I was keeping watch on the bubbling syrup was a slightly confusing reference regarding the bloom and gelatin. The recipes are broken down into Bloom, Syrup and Mallowing.I added the gelatin to the fruit puree which is now called the Bloom, but when the directions call for melting the gelatin in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften, my husband stopped and asked if I had already added the gelatin to someting. He pointed out that it should have been referred to as the Bloom. I could see how this could confuse someone. Once the gelatin has been added to a liquid, the remainder of the recipe it should be referred to as the Bloom.

I had to laugh at the two 1 star reviews. Come on people! One person obviously can't follow a simple direction if they were cooking a syrup and saving it for use days later. That doesn't warrant a 1 star review if you can't follow basic instructions. The other 1 star review was just weak! The person claims to be a professional chef and instructor and can't teach his/her students because the recipes aren't converted into metric measurements. Please!! This is a book for the US based home candy maker, not a professional kitchen. I spent 16 months at a very well known culinary academy and we were taught how to convert a recipe. It's called simple math.

From the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries, the American economy has been transformed by wave after wave of emerging technology: the steam engine, electricity, the internal combustion engine, computer technology. Yet technology-driven change leads to growing misalignment between an innovative economy and anachronistic legal and political structures until the gap is closed by the modernization of America's institutions—often amid upheavals such as the Civil War and Reconstruction and the Great Depression and World War II.

When the U.S. economy has flourished, government and business, labor and universities, have worked together in a never-ending project of economic nation building. As the United States struggles to emerge from the Great Recession, Michael Lind clearly demonstrates that Americans, since the earliest days of the republic, have reinvented the American economy—and have the power to do so again.

About the Author

Michael Lind is cofounder of the New America Foundation and policy director of its Economic Growth Program. His first three books of political journalism and history—The Next American Nation, Up from Conservatism, and Vietnam: The Necessary War—were all New York Times Notable Books. He writes frequently for the New York Times, Financial Times, and Salon.

America is on the Wrong Track

I found "Land of Promise" very informative. For a book on economic history it was surprisingly accessible. Michael Lind believes that American leaders can be divided into two groups: small-government Jeffersonians and big government Hamiltonians. Lind explains why he believes that Hamiltonianism is superior to Jeffersonianism. The Jeffersonians today are represented by the Republican Party and they tend to dislike big government. However, modern Jeffersonians, like Reagan and George W. Bush, advocated spending cuts while on the campaign trail, but reversed themselves while in office. The Hamiltonians generally believe that the US needs large, powerful organizations. Both Roosevelts and Dwight Eisenhower supported this view.

Lind argues that the government often does a lot of good and has played an important role in financing innovation. For example, the US military built the internet. Lind blames deregulation and the banks for most of the current economic problems. Lind claims that: “What is good about the American economy is largely the result of the Hamiltonian developmental tradition, and what is bad about it is largely the result of the Jeffersonian producerist school.” Lind likes big corporations, arguing that for industries that require massive capital investment, big is better (e.g., telecommunications, energy, and aircraft). He argues that the "American middle class enjoyed its zenith under a system of highly regulated, partly cartelized capitalism, and suffered under the less regulated capitalism that preceded it and followed it."

Lind's main conclusion seems to be that the US has been on the wrong track since the Carter Administration. Nixon was the last of the New Deal presidents. Mr. Lind wants a return to the economic policies that were in place during the 30 years following World War II. First, Jimmy Carter and then Ronald Reagan moved toward a more laissez-faire economy. The decades since then have seen far slower income growth for most Americans than the previous century. In order to rebuild the country and its middle class he suggests that there needs to be a change of direction.

Lind wants more manufacturing and less short-term thinking on investment. He believes that Wall Street is too powerful and the finance sector has had too much influence on the government. He wants to protect the domestic market from foreign competition. He points out that before Lincoln the US favored free trade, but it couldn't compete with the British manufacturing industry. Lincoln introduced protectionism and this allowed US manufacturers to grow and within 30 years the US had overtaken Britain. Nixon ended protectionism in the 1970s and US manufacturing slowly started to disappear. Most Asian countries built their economies through protectionism, it was only when they became competitive that they changed their view on trade. Lind argues there is a conflict between the financial and manufacturing sectors in the US. He concludes that free trade has resulted in the outsourcing of jobs and this hasn't been good for the American middle class. He also favors a more isolationist foreign policy with the US spending less on defense.

Lind argues that Americans are a pragmatic people. Eventually, they will see the logic in investing in roads, bridges, and education. The economic need for change will eventually create the political will for it. Lind never quite explains how the US has ended up as the richest large country in the world, even though other countries have pursued more Hamiltonian policies than the United States, without quite the same success. If you believe in protectionism, big government, and more regulation you will probably enjoy this book.

Hard to See The Thesis for the History Trees

Loved the history - both the retelling of stories familiar to me as well as introducing me to new historical figures, as well as helping me with new angles on historical figures I know. Worth the price of the book, even if you find the thesis against your own political views.

The idea that this is a thesis bolstered by a wikipedia style walk through history is described in the last section of the book. Linking this book's format with a World War II science paper describing the future was delightful. Might have been helpful as a preface, though.

Other reviewers have done a good job describing the overall dynamics Lind debates. What I would appreciate is the thesis described without all the historical footnotes - which is the bulk of the book. While I found the Hamilton - Jefferson debate a wonderful structure for a debate, I'm unsure either structure guides us towards the current evolutionary stage of political reality. I agree with the closing notes of the book, we need to see things anew - not recast current realities against the Enlightenment of early political rivals.

If you love history, this book will delight. If you love the political aspects of history and favor a centrist versus libertarian view of government/business/capitalist view, you will definitely want to read this work.

I have never been much of a history fan but this book is actually very well written and relatively short. It only briefly touches on the many different era's through the short history of the U.S. If you are looking to immigrate/learn more about the U.S. As it was this is a great book for it.

If you order the hardcover, you will probably receive a paperback like I did. There is a reason for it being less expensive. However, it is a comprehensive book, lots of info (esp. if you are a chemistry person like me). Minus one star for paper vs hardcover, and minus another because the item picture was different at the time I had ordered it.

About the Author

Spencer E. Cahill (1949-2006) was Professor of Sociology at the University of South Florida. The author or editor of four books and numerous articles, he was also editor of Social Psychology Quarterly; associate editor of Symbolic Interaction; and president of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction.

Kent Sandstrom is Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at North Dakota State University. The recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and author of several books, including Symbols, Selves, and Social Reality, Fourth Edition (OUP, 2013).

Carissa Froyum is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. She is deputy editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and recipient of the 2011 University Book and Supply Outstanding Teaching Award.

This book is made for those with little experience in leading missions trips. It highlights all the important steps you need to walk through prior to, during and after a missions trip. It is not as detailed as I'd prefer for my use but for anyone leading for a first time, I'd recommend it.
